As someone whos planning on running a panel for the first time with a friend who's more experienced, do you have any thing you think I, and those in my spot, should know?? (BTW, ours is legit just goofy, fun, ranking characters with prompts, nothing serious really.)
SAVE EVERYTHING LOCALLY!!!!
What does this mean? It means that every picture, video, song, AMV, slideshow, or gif you want to share should be on your computer. Not in your tabs, not on YouTube. On your computer. Many conventions do not have wifi, and even if you have a personal hotspot--back before it was included in my plan I literally used to pay extra to have a hotspot for conventions--if it's a very large convention, the local wifi ability may simply collapse. That happened to us this past weekend. Plenty of us had personal hotspots, but there were 30,000 people at this convention. The grid couldn't handle us all.
And for fuck's sake, I saw this twice this weekend and I am BEGGING you--do not try to run panels off your phone. Both of the panelists I saw do this had massive technical problems because that thing I just said? About the 30,000 people and the grid not being set up to accommodate that many all at once? They couldn't get signal. Nothing on their phones that required any kind of connection--which was basically everything--would reliably open and run. If you don't have a laptop, use a tablet. If you don't have either of those things, borrow from someone. Especially if you're doing a prompt/ranking panel, I assume you're going to want pictures or clips of characters. You want it to be something you can open with a simple click--not something where you sit there going "come on, come on....sorry, guys....come on....I'm having technical difficulties...open....it won't open....." while your audience gets restless.
MOVING ON!
Have a plan for how long you expect everything to take. Far, far more common than panelists not having enough material to fill their time is panelists racing to get the entire second half of their panel into ten minutes. An hour is faster than you think, so do a little practice now of gauging how long, say, "five minutes" is. You're not trying to create The One Master Plan here! It's just so you can comfortably figure out, say...do you have time for ten characters, or five? How much can you share? How long are the clips you're planning to use? (You'll also find that "one minute" is MUCH LONGER than you think it is when you go to show a clip and suddenly realize how long you've been quiet.) It's likely that your co-panelist already has that mental clock for panels--there's no shame in asking them to be your guide.
NEXT!
As a panelist with ADHD, I am begging you to take notes if you have even the slightest, barest suspicion you might need them (I honestly recommend them for all first-time panelists, just in case). Yes, even for a silly panel. Yes, even if you think it's going to be simple! This past weekend I looked directly at a picture of Patrick Stewart and said "it's true, Ian McKellen didn't just play Picard" and luckily the room thought I was making a joke, rather than catching on that my brain had just shit the bed. But for the first time in almost a decade, I'd lost my con notebook. And without it there in the corner of my eye, I looked directly at a man I could identify in my sleep and misnamed him. If you think notes will help you, please take them. Even if it's as simple as a list of "we have ten characters in this order and ten prompts in this order." Don't assume your slideshow will do, because. Again. I was literally looking at the photo in my slideshow.
PENULTIMATELY:
Slideshows aren't actually supposed to be used the way a lot of people think. A lot of younger folks who didn't grow up with slideshows being a thing you were actually required to learn how to do in school think what you do is write down exactly what you want to say, then read it off. That's not what they're for. Slideshows are more like a highlight reel. Tumblr is being weird about letting me add a photo to this ask, so check the reblogs--I'll add a screenshot of one of mine. Basically, have points listed that you want to talk about and then expand on them--don't just rattle it all off.
AND FINALLY:
HAVE FUN!!! It's no good if it's not for love.
