July 2021 Schitt’s Creek Fic Recs

Happy August!! This month has gone so quickly and yet we got so much wonderful fic being published almost every day! As always I’m not including any fics from the recent fests but I HIGHLY encourage you go and read them all! Elevate! 2021 was incredible with such a diverse mix of couplings, and the Passions and Pastimes fest will also begin posting soon!

1. he makes me feel like by @hullomoon

It was my birthday this month!!! And the LOVELY hullomoon posted this absolutely incredible first kiss barbecue fic for me!! It’s so incredibly sweet, I love canon diversions like this and this filled every possible wish I could have!! Thank you so much for this wonderful gift and if you haven’t read it PLEASE do for you own sake!

2. Tell Me When You Know by @maxbegone

Another addition to the Sweet Caffeine series! This is all about Patrick’s proposal which, from the previous fic, has been one of my very favourite proposals I have read. It’s so so lovely and sweet and the perfect addition to an already incredible series!

3. Everyday Magic (series) by @mostlyinthemorning (@houdini74)

I have been living for these magic fics! Magical realism is in my top three tropes and these have consistently been super fun and really really sweet! I was especially fond of the cat!David one, (unsurprisingly considering I also wrote one for the tropefest a few months ago) which is SO PERFECT, I love it when people get the characteristics so right even with something so far away from canon, and we ALWAYS deserve more catvid fics in the world.

4. a simple complication by @LFTPD

THEY’RE SUCH IDIOTS, I devoured this fic so fast. Patrick is such a dumb gay, letting everyone believe he and David are dating, while David ACTUALLY begins to believe it despite never having kissed Patrick. Incredible, hilarious, and sweet as hell!

5. Vampires Are People Too!: Season 1 by @petrodobreva

This fic has NOT gotten enough attention. It’s so incredibly detailed, with an incredibly developed storyline, and one of the sweetest explorations of David/Patrick as a high school relationship I have read. Like seriously run don’t walk to go and read this, you will thank me after.

6. got no sway on my destiny by @5ambreakdown

We love an AU with some trauma mixed in. This is a super short little exploration of alternate timelines which will leave you wanting more but also needing a solid week to recover. 

7. PDA: Public Displays of Anxiety by @delilah-mcmuffin

Nobody understands Patrick’s character intricacies like this fic does. It felt so very in character for him to overthink his and David’s PDA, and I loved the slight angst combined with mutual pining even though they’re already together.

8. Can You Help Me by @trueillusion82​

The Queen of Hurt/Comfort back at it with this very soft fic. It’s early relationship and has a lot of caretaker David which I adore, and as always the overthinking and tentative caring for each other is done just perfectly!!

9. The Dude Ranch by @alldaydream

Not much to say about this one except OMG COWBOY PATRICK, this one made me laugh so much, I loved the silly nature of it, I loved the immediate interest in each other, and of course I loved the teasing! Just the perfect combination of every meet-cute trope.

10. Before I Met You by @dinnfameron​

Incredible as always, this fic considers what if David and Patrick had met long before Schitt’s Creek, and been passing figures in each other’s lives. I love the concept that there was some fate or cosmic intervention in their meeting and I love how sweet they are with each other even before they know how important they will be!

June 2021 Fic Recs

HAPPY JULY! Sorry this is so late, I got covid and got trapped in isolation without my laptop but here is June’s fic recs!! So much good stuff coming out all the time I’m constantly in awe of the amazing writers in this fandom! These have definitely brought solace whilst I’ve been isolating. 

1. Incorrect by @lisamc-21

I’m assuming everyone has already read this by now but if you haven’t PLEASE do, it’s incredible. I was completely hooked on this for like a solid day and could barely put it down, the characterisation was (as always) exactly right, and the FEELINGS!! Incredible, amazing, mindblowing etc etc.

2. Where Words Fail by @houdini74

Everyone who knows me knows I LOVE a Marcy and Clint fic and this gave me everything I could ever ask for. Solving the miscommunication of MTP, general David supportiveness, and overwhelmed Brewers.

3. cross your heart by @5ambreakdown 

Ahhh this one ended me, ENDED ME, while I stand by Dan Levy’s no-homophobia-in-Schitt’s-Creek policy, life isn’t perfect, and nor are people. This hit me right where it hurt but god it was worth it, and it felt so so real, such a lived in experience. 

4. as though you carry it in your body by @dinnfameron 

PATRICK&ALEXIS SIBLINGS FOR LIFE. This is a pairing that just DO NOT get enough attention or screen time. I love fics about them growing close as in-laws and the ways Patrick just slots into the Rose family in the most perfect way, and I love post-canon stories about the Roses, and I love this fic.

5. ask away by @colourcodedbinders 

Queer Stevie, Stevie/Ruth, and some INCREDIBLE David & Patrick & Stevie vibes, this fic has it all. I loved it so much, Stevie does not get enough attention especially in the fic world and this filled a little gap I didn’t know I had!

6. waiting for lightning by @blackandwhiteandrose 

I don’t know what to say about this one except AHHHH I LOVED IT. I read it like, three times in a day and it gave me butterflies literally every time. I love David and Patrick finding each other sooner, so childhood friends AUs are just the best things ever, and this is just so gorgeous and lovely!!

7. If I Could Know Within My Heart by @MoreHuman 

More Married Without Children series and this one did not disappoint!! Not only did it have a HEAP tonne of queer feelings, it also had some lovely post-canon married David/Patrick which felt incredibly genuine and real, and the characters were so developed and honest!

8. caught in the slightest wind by @ratchet 

I am a simple human. I like storms. I like David and Patrick. I love this fic. Go read it, don’t wait for a storm for atmosphere, but save it and next time it DOES storm, make the most of it. You won’t regret it.

9. Take the Long Way Home by @midnightstreet 

I ADORE Rachel fics. In any form. This was so developed and such an interesting take on Patrick’s feelings about Rachel. It’s really well thought out and beautifully written, and honestly made me see their relationship in a whole new way which is very impressive.

April Schitt’s Creek Fic Round-Up

There has been some truly incredible fic coming out in the last month, with much much more to come in the ongoing Tropefest Collection, which you can access here! Here are a few of my very favourites!! (In no particular order).

1. everybody knows the secret by @fishyspots

Starting VERY hot with this Johnny & Patrick (slight) tension fic. I thought this was so artfully done, and I really was hooked from the start. I read it in the morning, finished off some work, and read it again in the evening. It’s just superb and really really true to the characters I loved it!

2. Too too fast by @grapehyasynth

IT’S SO SOFT, the early relationship feels get me so bad in this lil fic, the awkwardness, and David’s insecurity, and just the whole thing I’ve read like 20 times already. Yes, I’m aware Grape has been on like every list so far this year, no I’m not sorry, I’m obsessed with you.

3. The Art of Customer Service by @Woodsarelovely 

It’s a MEET-CUTE, bitches love a meet-cute, I’m bitches, and this one is the cutest of them all!!! So much mutual pining and public flirting, and then confessions from both sides?? What more could you ask for??

4. oh, we’ve got trouble now by @foxtails (@ratchet​)

And they were roommates who kiss!! This fic is hot as hell and so so full of flirty tension, which does NOT disappoint. Honestly just such a gift to read, and as with all these fics, plays in to literally ALL my jams.

5. The Midpoint by @roguebebe

Every day I ask the universe to bless us with some Roguebaby writing, and this month they DELIVERED. I got so emotional reading this fic I have to say, it was so so real and genuine, it made my heart ache, and honestly this is cheesy but it was genuinely very reassuring. The concept of being at the Midpoint even after Patrick’s happy ending made me feel so very happy and fulfilled.

6. Aere Perennius by @morehuman

There will never be enough of this politics AU, there should always be more. We deserve it. This one especially, I thought “omg is this gonna cause second hand embarrassment” but it absolutely did not, I was a little pile of heart eyes and mush by the end of it. 

7. i would be complex, i would be cool by @yourbuttervoicedbeau

I seriously need to get better at checking the F/F tag because I SO easily could have missed this one and what an awful thing that would have been. Alexis Rose/Ruth Clancy is truthfully not a pairing I had considered but it just makes SENSE, and this is stunning, and hot as hell, and so full of all that post-canon stuff you could hope for. 

8. Among Ash-Heaps and Millionaires by @fairmanor

It’s GATSBY FIC!! This is so beautiful, I know how much work has been put into it and it deserves all the attention for how stunning it is!!! Go read it!!

9. lovely, messy, like this by @maxbegone 

Who doesn’t love a make-out fic?? WHO?? This is like one of my all time favourites, it’s so hot, and flirty, and THEM. It’s also just really sweet as hell, it has all those comfortable, relationship feelings, and they just feel right together, I adore it. 

10. We’re Not There Yet by @eringiles 

Oh this is such a great one, thanks friend!

9. Which character(s) do you find most difficult to write?

For POV: Stevie. Not because I don’t relate to her (I do, god, I do) but because the way she wears and feels and processes her emotions is SO MUCH. I wrote two Elevate fics from her POV and swore never again, and then immediately turned around and decided angstapalooza needed a Stevie POV chapter. Oops 😂

For general dialogue/characterisation: Moira and Ted. (In fairness, I’ve never tried to write either of their POV — maybe that would also be hard!) But both these characters have such a specific cadence and... Moira’s vocab and Ted’s puns are both easy to go overboard on and make them read like a caricature. My god it’s satisfying when you get it right, though 😆
