Know what aliens might find strange? Knuckle popping. Even many humans assume that sound means itâs much more harmful than it actually is. Aliens would very likely assume that anything making that sound is doing appreciable damage, at least if their own bodies donât happen to have that precise phenomenon.
I mean, all animals pop their joints occasionally, but itâs much rarer in, e.g., jaguars, than in people of the same size (a stealth hunter would be in trouble if it was as crackly as humans can be). Things that are physiologically possible and things that are a widespread habit are two different things. So far as I know there is no anatomical reason goats canât bite their âfingernailsâ (dogs do, after all, while grooming or just because theyâre bored or nervous): but do they, much?
But if aliens are as crackly-jointed as we are, some of them definitely would crack their joints. Some dogs and cats play with bubble wrap, after all. âSatisfying crunchâ would be universal to anything that has to break shells, or bones, to get at foodâwhich is practically everything, since nutlike seeds and eggs and hard skeletons (inside or out) would probably be universal. (Maybe things that live entirely on electrolytic liquids wouldnât, assuming you can come up with a rationale for that becoming sapientâŚbut even they probably like breaking up crystallized clumps.)
