I just really love how Suguru remembers the day he left Satoru as him being angry. He remembers Satoru yelling across the street, eyes wide and teeth bared, fist balling up after he failed to kill him.
Even the line delivery after Suguru asks âor are you the strongest because youâre Satoru Gojoâ is angry.
And then Satoru remembers the day Suguru left him as himself being sad. The colors are black and blue, everyone blends together, he drops his hand from its sign after he fails to kill Suguru, he doesnât ball his fist.
The line delivery is much sadder, more confused and hurt in this version of his response to Suguru.
Watch them back to back and the tones are just so different, itâs so beautiful to see them in each of their perspectives.
Suguru thought he was pissing Satoru off, when in reality, he was breaking his heart.

title: seize the day and after hours(ao3)
pairing: gojo satoru/geto suguru
A jujutsu sorcererâs life is always busy, especially those of the strongest ones, so when a window of opportunity opens itself up just to relax and be with someone you care most about, one can only give in to it.
Notes for this AU:
In-demand jujutsu sorcerer Gojo x Teacher Geto!
In this setting, Toji failed in his mission and still got k-worded, Riko successfully merged with Tengen, so Geto didn't spiral down the "I hate monkeys" hole and Gojo didn't think of becoming a teacher. \o/
âItâs of vital importance that you do not forget to put up a Curtain before you start a mission, even if you cannot see the curse at first glance,â Suguru then carefully dismantles the Curtain before five pairs of inquisitive eyes, âCan anyone tell me why?â
A hesitant hand rises up in the air.
âYes, Nanako?â
âUhm, because non-sorcerers might get to see if ever the exorcism becomes a big event and itâs important that we keep the matters of the jujutsu world hidden from them to keep the status quo?â
âYes, exactly,â Suguru smiles at her. Then, upon noticing the nearby presence, he makes his voice a little bit louder, âSo donât ever forget to set up a Curtain unless you want to be like a certain someone whose magnificent accomplishment of exploding a house got featured in the news.â
âHey Suguru, stop slandering my renowned name in front of the kids.â The ârenownedâ Gojo Satoru saunters over to their group, distributing the several bags on his hands. âGot you all souvenirs!â
âDid I lie?â
âNope. Totally happened.â Satoru grins cheekily, standing next to Suguru and hooking an arm around his shoulder. âMissed me?â
âWeâre still having a lesson here.â Suguru flicks at Satoruâs forehead, but he doesnât pry away from his hold. Itâs been over a week since they last saw each other after all. He did miss the man. âAny contribution to make up for your disturbance?â
âHmm, let me thinkâŚah! If you want to exorcise curses, youâve got to be crazier than them.â
âThatâs not particularly helpful.â
âItâs because youâre unimaginative.â
In front of five unwilling audiences, Satoru clings to his side like a leech. Suguru tries with all his might to deliver the last few important points of the dayâs lesson, with one of his hands keeping Satoruâs face at bay from smothering his own.
âAnd thatâs all for todayâs session. Tomorrow, weâll discuss some preparations before your next field assignment.â
âYay! Suguruâs mine now!â Satoru almost didnât let him finish his final remarks, squeezing by his side even tighter.
âGah,â Nobara is the first one to openly show her complaint about the public display of attention in front of them, âCan you please have some consideration for us single students, Gojo-san?â
âArenât you too young to be thinking of romance?â Satoru answers back as if heâs talking to someone of his own age. âNo dating until youâve graduated!â
âWerenât the two of you already dating during your second year in high school?â Megumi points out without missing a beat.
âWhat?!â Yujiâs jaw dropped, âTheyâre that long already?â
âAnyway,â Suguru finally cuts them off, âThis has been a very fruitful conversation. You can go spar now, maybe the second years are looking for sparring partners as well.â
Teacher and students finally part ways, with the teacher dragging a long clingy blindfolded man with him. Satoru recounts to him every detail of his trip the past two weeks, even those that are not related to the mission at all, and Suguru is all ears. Ever since they reached Special Grade level as sorcerers, theyâve been given fewer missions together. Sorcerers are very few, after all, and they need to maximize their numbers efficiently. Sometimes, Suguru would find himself wishing thereâs some especially dangerous situation that would require both of their presence, but heâd take back the thought as soon as itâs out, still preferring this kind of stability. So for now, he can only live through Satoruâs lively retelling.
Right as they arrived at their shared room, Satoru finally ends his narration.
âSeems like itâs another breeze of a mission, huh,â Suguru pulls off the blindfold over Satoruâs eyes and smooths down his hair.
âMhm,â Satoru wraps his arms tightly around Suguruâs waist, burying his face on the crook of his neck. âWould have been faster if you were there.â
âDo you even need me?â
âOf course! What are you talking about?â Satoru lifts his head and stares directly at Suguruâs eyes, âIndividually, we are strong enough to take down the most powerful curses. But together, I bet we could take all over the world.â
âAnd your point being?â
âSince weâre not onto world domination yet, we canât help but not be together all the time.â
âIdiot.â Suguru presses a finger on Satoruâs forehead, earning him a pout. âNo world domination. Keeping the peace is enough.â
âMmmmâŚyeah but I still want to do something about those idiotic higher-ups.â
âYouâre too chaotic for your own good. How about settling here and teaching with me instead?â
âSuguru.â Satoruâs tone is suddenly serious. His hands grabbed at Suguruâs waist, pulling him close. âIs that a marriage proposal? You know Iâm gonna say yes.â
âStill thinking about it.â
âWhat a tease.â Satoruâs fingers find their way through Suguruâs hair, undoing his bun to let his hair loose. He then leans forward, uttering lazily against his mouth, âIf you donât propose first, I might just do it ahead of you.â
âIs that a challenge?â
âMaybe.â With a smile, Satoru closes the distance with a kiss.
Suguru sighs into it, letting Satoru lazily nibble on his lips. Some days, itâs more than enough to just lay down and let time pass, no rush, no urgency, just the two of them entangled in each otherâs arms. A jujutsu sorcererâs life is always busy, especially those of the strongest ones, so when a window of opportunity opens itself up just to relax and be with someone you care most about, one can only give into it.
_ _
A familiar ringtone wakes Suguru from his sleep, his eyes opening to the darkness. The analog clock by the wall shows 07:21 PMâŚhe has been out for a few hours. A weight is draped over him, rendering him unable to move for a moment.
âSatoru.â
âHm?â
âPhone.â
Satoru doesnât budge. âThatâs yours.â
âWell, how can I move with you wrapped around me?â
After a slight pause, Satoru reaches for the phone himself and answers the call. âHello? Oh, Auntie, you called! Yeah, heâs right here. Nah, you didnât bother us at all. Iâll give the phone to him now.â
Suguru takes the call, stifling a yawn as he answers, âHello Mom, itâs been a while.â
He watches as Satoru lazily walks to the cabinet and pulls out a set of comfortable clothes, simultaneously gracing him with an unhindered view of his naked back.
âYeah, itâs good here, just a bit busy with the studentsâ upcoming field assignmentâŚHm? Wait let me ask,â he covers the mouthpiece and sits up, âSatoru, Momâs asking when we can visit.â
âAs soon as youâre free,â his head comes out of the shirt, hair all messy, giving him a youthful and unrestrained look, âI have all the privilege to request a leave anytime I want. Iâll go get us dinner, okay?â
âSure, go ahead.â Suguru waves him away, returning to the phone call with his mother, âI think we can visit during the break if thereâs nothing urgent. Is there something up?â
The door outside shuts close. Satoru turns to his side, his gaze landing on the frames displayed on the bedside table. The largest among them is a group picture from last winter vacation â him, his parents, Satoru, and the four kids. For some reason, it felt like a family picture, so he had it especially framed, taking center spot among the others.
âWell, the girls are always on their phones in their free time, of course, theyâd be easier to contact than me. Itâs a bit busy handling a class of five, they said itâs already a big batch. Yes, yes, Iâll tell them that.â
Ten years ago, after Suguru has successfully rescued Mimiko and Nanako from that one village, he immediately went to his parent's house to ask for their help. After all, what does a seventeen-year-old know about taking care of kids? His parents were initially shocked, but upon hearing the situation, they immediately took pity on the girls and gladly took them in. Youâre always in Tokyo anyway, the house feels a bit empty without a kid, they said. But the girls wanted otherwise. After a bit of coaxing, Suguru managed to convince them to stay in his familyâs house until at least he graduates from Jujutsu Tech, then he will take them back to Tokyo to live with him.
Little did he know, Satoru would also pick up two kids to take care of, and this was after he declared he would not babysit anymore after they completed their task with Riko two years prior. Theyâre not simple kids either; though they go by the surname Fushiguro, the boy â Megumi â has an inherited technique of the Zenâins, and yet Satoru fought tooth and nail to be their guardian. Since he didnât want them to be involved with the jujutsu world yet, he decided to let the kids stay in Sendai until Megumi has to attend Jujutsu Tech.
The twins and the Fushiguros occasionally met when Suguru would come to Sendai with Satoru, but last yearâs winter, they decided to spend it in Suguruâs home much to his parentsâ delight, and they were one complete family.
Suguru smiles at the memory, just as his mother finishes her long list of reminders for the kids on the other side of the phone.
âOkay, okay, you take care, too. I wonât forget. Love you. Tell Dad I love him, too. Bye.â
After stretching a bit, Suguru finally gets up from the bed and picks up his scattered clothes on the floor, dressing himself up. Just as he is about to wear his shirt, he catches sight of the marks on his body, most especially the bruising spot on the nook of his neck.
âGoddamnit, Satoru,â he mutters, coming closer to the mirror to check how badly Satoru left evidence. âGonna make you pay next time.â
âDinnerâs here!â Just then, Satoruâs head pops from the doorway, his blue eyes peeking right above the rim of his sunglasses. He sees Suguru standing in front of the mirror, then chuckles audibly.
âShut it.â
âWhat?â A sly smile grows on Satoruâs lips as he strides closer to Suguru. He caresses the bruising mark on the nook of Suguruâs neck, then bends down to lightly kiss it, murmuring, âAny complaints about my service earlier?â
âMagnificent as always,â Suguru sighs defeatedly, âThe marks you leave thoughâŚâ
âI made sure your uniform will hide this,â Satoru winks at him in the mirror. âCome on, I got food.â
He drags them to the dinner table where two bowls of meatballs and steaming rice are waiting for them, âHere, eat up.â
âYou bought this?â
âNo, the kids made that. Yuji was teaching them earlier when I dropped by. Mimiko and Nanako especially made these meatballs for you.â
âAnd how about the meatballs in the bowl youâre eating?â
âMegumi made this for me.â
ââŚâ
âHe made this for his friends, but I took it.â
Suguru flashes him a smile, âI love it when youâre being honest.â
âShut up.â
âDid you really make that much of a bad first impression on that kid? I canât believe itâs been nine years, but he still hasnât warmed up to you.â
âI dunno,â Satoru pouts, trying to recall the memory of their first meeting together. âI wish he could rely on me more, you know, like how the girls rely on you.â
âI do think they rely too much on me, Iâm still wondering if thatâs a good thing or a bad thing. Well, I guess itâs because they see me as a parental figure, too. Does Megumi see you like one?â
ââŚâ
âFigured as much. He doesnât know about the real deal from your negotiations with the Zenâin clan, doesnât he?â
âNo need to tell him that. I donât want him to feel indebted either way.â
âMm-mh,â Suguru smiles. Satoru can be such an insensitive prick sometimes, but when about the most important matters, his compassion pulls through. âMegumiâs such a spoiled child with you.â
âAs if youâre not spoiling the twins yourself? Why is Mimikoâs phone new again?â
âAhâŚher previous one got destroyed while on a mission with Nanako last week. Of course, I had to buy a new one immediately.â Suguru reaches into Satoruâs plate and grabs one of the meatballs, quickly eating it before Satoru can complain. âUnlike you, buying stuff for Megumi and Tsumiki even though they donât need it yet. A good thing those two kids have a sound head above their shoulders. Youâre such a bad influence â huh, these meatballs sure have so much ginger.â
In revenge, Satoru steals one of Suguruâs meatballs as well, munching on it with much gusto, âGonna have to use my money somewhere, you know, since you still donât want to marry and all.â
âCan we get married here in Japan?â
âMmm, I donât think so. Not yet. Flying to another country to make it happen is no big problem though, just say the word.â
âSince when have you been a fan of formalities?â Suguru raises an eyebrow at him, âDonât use me as an excuse to squander your fortune.â
âCome on! Think of it: when we get married, youâll be officially under the Gojo clan. Weâll have two Special Grades in one family, the higher-ups would be so pissed!â
âYou!â Suguru gives him a light kick underneath the table, âAnd here I thought youâre being serious. Turns out you just want to get under those old menâs nerves.â
âOf course, Iâm serious! Just noting out the fact that thereâs that bonus,â Satoru grins, wiggling his eyebrows, âWhat do you think?â
So many years have passed, it can be said that theyâve also developed in different aspects. But in simple moments like this, Suguru is reminded that though the two of them have grown together, many things never really change through the passing of time. Just like when Satoru once suggested the idea of going against Master Tengen and he readily agreed to it, this newer plan doesnât seem less achievable. Whatâre a few higher-ups with the two strongest jujutsu sorcerers in Japan?
Finally, Suguru grins back, âSounds like a great deal to me.â
title: the second chance we didn't ask for (ao3)
pairing: gojo satoru/geto suguru
both satoru and suguru are free from the prisons that bound them, but returning to life is another matter entirely.
The Zenâin estate boasts of its wide space and multiple residences, a feature Satoru is able to take advantage of. After being released from the Prison Realm with a death sentence hanging over his head, there really isnât anywhere he can go. Suguruâs case is worse, of course, this death sentence is his second one. He might have been able to take back control of his body, but it doesnât erase the crimes he and that ancient sorcerer did while residing inside him.
If it was up to Satoru, he wouldnât drag Megumi into this any further. The boy â now the undisputed leader of the prominent Zenâin Clan â insisted, owing it to the fact that Satoru kept him and his sister under his care when they had no place to go to.
âSorry for troubling you, Clan Leader Zenâin.â
âPlease, Gojo-sensei, you should be the last person calling me that. Besides, Iâm an accomplice anyway.â With the passing of the years came Megumiâs mastery of the Ten Shadows Technique, granting Satoru this freedom. âThe last place theyâd look for is their own backyard, wonât they?â
âThatâs smart. Your teacher must be really great.â
Megumi ignores his lousy attempt at a façade and jabs directly at the issue at hand, âHow is he?â
For a moment, Satoruâs shoulders seem to drop, but he immediately straightens up, as if that moment of small weakness was but an illusion.
âI donât know, but Iâm working on it. No worries, heâs no threat with me around.â
âIâm not worried about him.â
Time didnât pass for Satoru inside the Prison Realm, but the world has moved on without waiting for him. He looks at Megumi without having to lower his gaze, smiles genuinely, and reaches out to ruffle the boyâs hair, âSo responsible already. Donât worry about me, either. I can handle this.â
-
Though the Zenâin estate is big, Satoru and Suguru had to reside in one of its smaller, unused quarters, leaving them with a small space with the living room, the kitchen, the dining room, and the bedroom altogether. At least, the bathroom was a separate structure on its own, albeit itâs not big enough for comfort. Satoru thinks this is still better than none, besides, with this arrangement, he can keep an eye on Suguru all the time.
Suguru isnât too keen on the fact that heâs being guarded, but itâs not like he can put up a fight either way. That ancient sorcererâs plan released all the curses he had so far collected and left him with very basic ones. He did try to resist before, almost at the cost of their small quarters, but without his previous arsenal, he isnât much of a match for Satoru.
âKeeping me here is pointless.â
It was the first conversational sentence Suguru drops several days after they have settled in the Zenâin estate, spoken over a lukewarm cup of black coffee. The television blares unintelligibly on the corner, its volume never loud enough to be heard beyond the walls of their small room.
Satoru looks up from his own cup, just having dropped the fourth cube of sugar in it.
âThe world is after my head,â Suguru adds.
âThey are after me, too, donât think youâre so special.â
âYouâre a vital member of the Gojo clan⌠No matter how the higher-ups seem to hate you, if you just bring my head to them, theyâll have to forgive your previous offenses. Thereâs no use in keeping me here, Iâm a criminal.â
âI need no forgiveness. Not from them.â
Suguru ignores the implication. âJust kill me already.â
âDeath is not the only path. Youâre just being a coward, Suguru.â
âWhat? Do you want me to spend this second life repenting for all the lives I took? I still donât care about them, Satoru.â
âRepentance? Both of usâŚweâre beyond that. Youâve killed people. Iâve brought people to their deaths. Thereâs already too much blood in our hands.â
âThen should we die together?â Suguru smiles â it is anything but sincere. Satoru has almost forgotten what his real smile looks like.
Satoru drops another cube of sugar. âWe will, but not anytime soon.â
-
Satoru sleeps next to Suguru, not because he hopes to form some intimacy through contact, nor to make sure he will not run away in the middle of the night, but because there are times where terrors unseen haunt Suguruâs slumber, Satoru would need to hold him down lest he ends up hurting himself. He used to keep the distance as well, sleeping on the couch, but after one close call, Satoru didnât want to take another chance.
It was also during these moments where Suguruâs walls are at their lowest, and they could have a semblance of a proper and civil conversation.
âWhat is it this time?â Satoru asks, almost an involuntary response at this point, his hand already smoothing Suguruâs hair, rubbing circles down his back.
âHeâs trying to creep in again.â His voice is hoarse, low, almost inaudible, as if in fear that when he speaks loud enough, the nightmare will turn into reality. âHe saysâŚthis brain is hisâŚand he can return anytime he wantsâŚâ
When Suguru is like this, Satoru can hold him close without being pushed away, and so Satoru does, wrapping Suguru tightly between his arms.
âYouâre stronger than him, you took over him. That bastard wonât own you again.â
âIf I die, itâll finally be over.â
âYou wonât die. Not on my watch.â
-
With the small space and bare minimum mode of entertainment, Satoru resorts to watching movies with Suguru to pass the time.
Well, to call it âwatching withâ is too much of a stretch.
âWhat do you want to watch today?â Satoru asks, as usual.
Suguru doesnât respond, as usual too, remaining seated on the corner of the bed, always seemingly creating as much physical distance he could between the two of them. Whatever closeness they would have during Suguruâs nightmares dissipates as if it never existed in the first place.
Satoru eventually gives up with a sigh, picking a 2008 horror movie from the selection this time.
âIâm guessing you havenât seen this yet.â
He loads the disc onto the player, then settles himself on the end of the small couch. Itâs some sort of an unspoken invitation, one that Suguru never entertains.
The film plays, the film ends.
Itâs a daily cycle.
-
Every now and then, Megumi drops by personally, providing them with their daily necessities. In this situation, his Ten Shadow Techniques are particularly useful for hiding the things he brings them, only pulling it out once he is within the four walls of the small quarters. They canât be too careless, after all. Whenever Megumi arrives, Satoru takes it upon himself to do the cooking and even sets aside a portion for Megumi himself.
âHow is it outside?â
âCurses are still running rampant,â Megumi says, his tone as if still a student reporting to his teacher. Nevertheless, his bearing has become more and more that of a clan leader, âThereâs quite a lot, so it will really take some time.â
The responsible person is quietly laying down the bed â whether he is truly asleep or just pretending, Satoru just lets him be. The sizzle of the oil as he pours the ingredients onto the pan fills in the momentary silence.
âAnd how is being a clan leader?â
âI think I can understand why the late elder Naobito was drinking all the time.â
âHaha, now donât go picking up his habit. Youâve got a former clan head before you here, just ask for my help if you need it.â
âI feel like Kamo-san would know more about being a clan head than you.â
âWas never one to deal with family politics anyway.â
âDonât worry about the affairs of the Gojo family. Okkotsu-san is making sure your family wonât lose its place.â
âI knew I could always rely on the new generation.â
âBut Gojo-sensei, many of us still do rely on you.â
âA habit that must be changed.â Satoru turns off the stove and transfers the food onto the prepared bowl. âItâs for this very reason the incident at Shibuya became possible.â
His eyes wander to Suguruâs figure then, and he notices how tense the other manâs shoulders are. In fact, they really havenât talked much about that time. The ancient sorcerer knew of Satoruâs weakness; Satoru wonders if Suguru himself came to realize it.
âNo, I mean...,â Megumi seems to want to say something else, but in the end, he just sighs in defeat, âNever mind.â
âDonât be thinking too much. Here, have this,â Satoru gives him a bowl of the freshly cooked stir fry, âAdded some extra ginger especially for you.â
He takes another look at Suguru ââ he doesnât seem to be planning in joining them. In the end, Satoru decides to eat dinner with Megumi. Itâs only when Megumi bid his farewell and left the room did Suguru finally move, only catching a glimpse of his retreating figure.
âYour dinnerâs ready,â Satoru tells him, âItâs still a bit warm.â
Suguru stays seated on the bed, his eyes still at the door. âMegumi, that kid, he looks oddly familiar.â
âRemember Zenâin Toji?â A frown forms on Suguruâs forehead, his lips pursing rather unhappily. Satoru immediately quips, âWell, Megumiâs his son. Megumi didnât know anything about his fatherâs shady business, and they were left without parents, too, so I took him under my care.â
âHe seems to be quite dependent on you.â
âIs he? That kid hates asking me for help.â
âWhen he said many of them still rely on you, he was probably referring to himself. I know that tone.â
âFrom where? The two kids you had with you?â
Suguru suddenly stops responding. Itâs apparent that the topic of the two girls is something he didnât want to talk about. Though Suguru never told him about what happened, Satoru has been able to connect the dots from the first report of Suguruâs crime to the time he showed up in Jujutsu Tech to declare war.
But still, he wished that Suguru can tell it to him in his own words. Thereâs so much that happened in the last decade, cleaving an immeasurable distance in the space between them â an emptiness about the people and things and circumstances that shaped them to be the people that they are now.
âItâs funny though,â Satoru tests the waters, trying to fill the gap starting from his own side, âBack then, we said weâd run away together with Amanai if she wanted to. We failed on that part, butââ
âWe still ended up babysitting,â Suguru continues for him, the tension on his shoulders replaced by a sudden weight, âI guess Riko-chan got the best deal out of that incident.â
âThe girlsââ
âIâm not hungry.â Suguru cuts him off immediately, lays back on the bed, and turns around, covering himself with a blanket. He obviously didnât want to talk about his own share of babysitting, so Satoru lets the conversation go.
For now, Satoru bottles his many questions â
Why did you run away?
Why didnât you force me to come with you?
Why didnât you tell me all the things that have bothered you?
Why did you suffer with your thoughts in silence?
If I tried a little harder, would you have come with me?
There are so many things to talk about, many things that canât be talked about. Patience is one of Satoruâs virtues, and when it comes to Suguru, it becomes the greatest.
-
Many times, he catches Suguru staring at his own reflection in the mirrorâŚno, not at his reflection, but the wound lining his forehead. Satoru isnât as skilled as Shoko in terms of healing others â the skull is intact, the wound is gone, but the scar remains, a reminder to them both every single day.
âDoes it bother you?â he asks.
It takes a while before Suguru replies. âA bit.â
âA full bangs will hide the scars.â
A small smile starts to form on the edges of Suguruâs lips, but it disappears in a flash, replaced by a melancholy look on his face, âMimiko and Nanako would have loved to see that.â
âAre thoseâŚtheir names?â
ââŚYes.â
The girls he saved and raised throughout these years, to whom he exchanged his status as a sorcerer to be a curse user, just so he can provide them a better life. After all thatâs happened, their place is still big in his heart. Not a single ash could be recovered in the ruins left by Sukuna, and so Suguru mourns with only the memories the girls have left him, memories his body was able to keep despite death.
Later in bed, Suguru weeps quietly. Satoru holds him. In between them, there is silence.
-
Satoru loads a 2009 suspense thriller this time, one that he himself hasnât had the chance to watch yet for some reason. With a bowl of popcorn in tow, he settles himself at the end of the couch.
The film starts.
Just as the title appears, he feels the couch shift.
Satoru holds his breath, turns to look ââ Suguru sits next to him, his legs already crossed comfortably.
âMind if I watch with you?â he asks.
Satoru smiles, offering him the bowl, âNot at all.â
The film plays. The film ends.
And by the time it does, Suguruâs head is already resting Satoruâs shoulder, and Satoruâs head on Suguruâs. The positions are so familiar even though it has been over ten years since they were last together like this. The credits roll and neither of them moves.
âIt sucked.â Suguru is the first one to speak.
âSure did,â Satoru lets out a laugh, âWant to watch another one?â
âLet me pick this time.â
âYour call.â
-
âSatoru.â
Suguru calls out his name in the dark, certain that he is still awake. Satoru turns. In the dim light, he finds Suguru staring up at the ceiling, seemingly lost in thought. His nightmares have been recurring less and less, and at times they can go a whole night with a peaceful rest.
âCanât sleep again?â
âNo, I wanted to ask you something ââ Why didnât you chase after me?â
Memories of Shinjuku are still vivid in Satoruâs mind, especially the view of Suguruâs back getting further and further away from him, his own outstretched fingers curling into a fist. Looking back at all his years, itâs the only time he has ever felt so helpless. Shibuya canât even compare.
âYou didnât seem to be the type to be swayed if I held you back.â
âAnd after that? Youâre a jujutsu sorcerer. You have the responsibility to clean up curse users like me. Why didnât you chase after me?â
âI didnât want to be the one who kills you.â
Suguru turns to face him then, his expression solemn, âYet you did.â
Satoru canât help but reach out, running a hand over Suguruâs left arm. If thereâs one thing heâd give that ancient sorcerer credit for, he fixed up Suguru quite well. âIt was beyond me already. You declared war. I was under orders.â
Suguru doesnât shy away from the touch, but neither does he reciprocate. âAnd what about now?â
âYou and I are both fugitives. No need to follow some stupid higher-ups.â
âFreedom?â
âAs free as we can be in this small quarters, yes.â
Ironic as it is, what Satoru just said was true. Step out and their tails will be chased by jujutsu sorcerers, stay in and they can maintain this pretense of liberty. In any case, it canât be worse than staying inside the Prison Realm or being controlled by some ancient being.
âBack in Shibuya, many people died.â
âTrying to make me feel guilty?â
âNot at all. I just wanted to ask what you think of it now.â
Satoru ponders for a while, then with a sigh he says, âCanât be helped. Itâs regrettable, but itâs not like Iâm a god. That brain knew me too well ââ Do you still hate them? Non-sorcerers?â
âI donât know. It used to be my fuel, but Iâve spent it all. Now Iâm justâŚdrifting.â
âDrifting isnât bad. We can drift together over this sea of blood beneath us.â
A small laugh escapes Suguruâs lips. âSatoru, you really are so foolish. Because of me, you got sealed. Because of me, thereâs a death penalty over your head. Why do you even still stay with me?â
What value does one Geto Suguru hold that the great Gojo Satoru can turn his back on the world just to be by this personâs side? Shouldnât have it been obvious by now? Satoru canât put all his heartâs contents into words, and so he reaches for Suguruâs hand instead and places a soft kiss on his palm.
âIâve let you go twice,â he whispers, his breath warming Suguruâs cold hands, âand they both turned out to be very bad decisions.â Satoru looks up, meeting Suguruâs astonished gaze in the dim light, âIâm not letting you go again.â

Despite the chaos unleashed in the world, humanity still observed festivities, especially something like Setsubun as it concerns the cleansing of evil spirits. It also happens to be Suguruâs birthday. Upon Satoruâs request, Megumi drops by their small quarters and brings them food apt for the occasion. Satoru takes it from him with much gratitude and prepares the table, inviting him to eat with them.
It is a bit awkward, after all, Suguru has never really interacted with this young Zenâin clan head. His uncanny resemblance with Fushiguro Toji also rails up his fight-or-flight tendency, as if his body remembers the person who quite turned his world upside down.
âWhat?â Megumi suddenly asks him, the boyâs own shoulders tense, âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âNothing,â Suguru offers a weak smile, âI was just reminiscing â I fought your father once.â
Megumi visibly relaxes, very much unlike when he asked the same question to Satoru over a decade ago. âApparently, I did, too.â
âApparently?â
âI didnât know he was my father at that time. I just came to know recently.â
âHeâs crazy strong.â
âThat he was.â
âSatoru looked after you?â
âHe occasionally dropped by, but heâs no more a parent than my negligent father.â
âHeyâ,â Satoru tries to butt in the conversation and save his reputationâ
âNo wonder. I thought youâre too good of a person to have been brought up by this nuisance.â
Itâs useless.
âI heard that.â
âI was only speaking the truth ââ Fushiguro Megumi, isnât it? I apologize for imposing on you,â Suguruâs tone shifts, his fingers wrung together on top of his knees, âI donât have anything to offer in return, I even had your sister caught up in all this mess. I can only thank you for letting me stay here unnoticed.â
âIâm no saint, I also have my personal biases. And I didnât do this for you. Since Gojo-sensei asked for it, itâs nothing I canât do. Besides, my sisterâs issue has already been resolved, no need to hold onto things that are past. JustâŚwhatever your issue is, please deal with it yourselves.â
Just in time, Satoru finishes laying down the food on the table, a small cake with a single candle lit on top taking the center spot. His eyes meet Suguruâs, his lips curving up in a soft smile. âDonât worry, weâre already working on it.â
-
âWe can be likeâŚI donât knowâŚrogue jujutsu sorcerers or something. There are too many curses running about, Iâm sure they wonât notice us if we do clean up some. We'll be doing them a great favor, too, you know?â
In the end, the two of them decided they canât stay in the Zenâin estate forever. Sprawled on the bed, theyâve been discussing how to move forward with limited resources and a death penalty over their heads.
âYouâre too noticeable for us to keep lowkey.â
Satoru suddenly stops, not failing to hear Suguruâs use of the word âusâ. A sudden warmth blossomed in his chest, like the first ray of sunshine after a long, arduous, winter. Itâs the onset of spring within his reach.
âMaybe if we eliminate all the released curses, theyâd provide us both amnesties.â
âI released them, remember? The moment anyone from the jujutsu society sees me, Iâm as good as dead.â
âI wonât allow that, of course.â
âNo need to be so gallant. We can just run away after.â
âWhere to?â
Suguru doesnât even miss a beat when he replies, âAnywhere.â
-
âGojo-sensei, are you sure about this?â
Under the cover of the night, three silhouettes huddle in an obscure corner of the Zenâin estate.
âWe donât want to overstay our welcome either,â Satoru smiles.
âYou wonât,â Megumi assures him, âYouâve taken care of me for nine years, after all.â
âThen Iâll come back to settle the rest of your debt when things calm down, okay?â Satoru reaches out to pat Megumiâs hair one last time, âFor now, weâll have to deal with our lives on our own.â
âPlease donât die,â Megumi says with a stern look. âAnd please donât get yourself sealed again.â
âWho do you think youâre talking to?â
With a final farewell, Megumi retreats back into the Zenâin estate.
Itâs only until his figure disappears that Satoru finally turns around and faces Suguru. He stretches out an arm, reaching for him. The weak moonlight brings an almost glittery sheen over his hair, reflecting the galaxy on his eyes. The sight is so beautiful itâs almost breathtaking â they havenât been out for a while, and now, in just a few steps, it will be the road to freedom.
