Hi,
I saw that you've finally moved and settled in Sweden. When do your classes begin and how long is your course?
I am about to move to Belgium for my masters next week and I am quite nervous. The idea of packing up my current life (especially being selective on what to bring with me and what to leave behind) and settling in a new place with an entirely new social scene and culture feels me with...dread. I haven't been in academia for close to 4 years now and I am uncertain on how to cope with this anxiety of going back to school in a very unfamiliar setting.
How are you able to cope with this change in your life?
hello, my classes start in September so very soon and my master's program is two years! towards the end of my application process, I was actually deciding between either going to Brussels or Stockholm, so I was exactly in your shoes not too long ago. I can share the nervousness - it's something very very natural, I hope you know that. First, packing is stressful but it doesn't have to be. I mariekondo-ed it: step one is thing about your baggage allowance, step two is think about what you need necessarily, step three is fit in the things you love. in my packing list the categories were paperwork (passport etc) , wardrobe (clothes for every season, pjs, etc), personal care (skincare, toothbrush, makeup, etc), electronics (because I love photography) and stationary (because I love journaling). bring the essentials, and something for your hobbies and maybe something sentimental. you can be selective with serenity because you're not abandoning anything, just putting them on hold - everything will be there for when you come back! also, it helps to remind yourself that you are not your belongings - you are you and no matter what you have or don't have you will always have yourself. that helped me. and for the nervousness - I get it. going back to academia, or any new environment is stressful. moving is stressful! but, remind yourself that once you overcome this you will feel so powerful and looking back you can always use it as proof that you can do hard things. I recommend reading "the comfort crisis" by Michael Easter on this point! on coping, for me it always goes through writing and movement so I journaled lots and walked for hours everyday really early in the morning or when I had time. even just for a little bit, getting your thoughts on paper and hearing the birds outside makes you feel lighter. connection to self and to nature! I wish you good luck, everything will be okay <3
