3rd January 1750, birth of the Italian magician and showman, Joseph Pinetti. Performing under the name Theophrastus Paracelsus, Joseph Pinetti performed frequently in his theatre des Menus Plaisirs du Roi, in the later part of the 18th century, and was the most celebrated magician of his time. Previously the performance of magic had been performed in the street; Pinetti brought his magic to theatres in the form of ‘scientific experiments’. His command of audiences earned him fame, fortune, royal patronage, and the title of ‘The Professor of Natural Magic’ He was the first magician to take advantage of advertising for the theatre. Joseph Pinetti is featured in the in the Ofgraveconcern Industrial Sublime Tarot 1760 - 1848, an historically inspired tarot deck, with a heavy dose of steampunk illustration. Prints of the cards handcoloured or black ink can be found on the website, and come with an historical explanation of the card.
