Chapter ten: Happily Ever After?
******************************
“Come on Liebling, Theo almost has the vault open and your brother should be finishing off Karl any moment now.” He said, helping you stand.
“I don’t understand how you can be so uncaring about these men being killed. You’ve worked with them for how long and you just led them to their deaths.”
“Meeting them, working with them, its all been for one reason. To be able to be with you, to be able to be with the women I love. And now that I know I have a child, a beautiful baby girl I will not let anything or anyone get in the way of that happening. We are going to have the life we deserve together. A big house with an enclosed front porch so we can sit outside and watch the day go by without getting bitten by bugs or getting sunburnt. We’re going to sit inside on cold days and curl up in a warm blanket while we drink tea and watch movies. We’re going to watch our baby grow and maybe one day have another. We’re going to be happy. That makes all of this worth it.” He assured you.
“Promise me, after tonight nothing else like this. Ever. No stealing, killing, hurting anyone. I just wanna be a boring family.”
“Liebling I’ve had enough excitement in my life to last a lifetime. The only excitement I want to experience is from chasing our children around the yard and hearing my wife tell me she loves me. I’m ready to settle down and be a normal boring domestic couple. I’m ready to truly live, and I can only do that with you by my side.” He caressed your cheek with his thumb and kisses your forehead. He took your hand and lead you out into the hallway and to the elevator where you went up to meet Theo at the vault.
Once reaching the vault Theo furrowed his brows at you both. He looked around behind you to see if the others were following but when he didn’t see them he looked back at Hans.
“What happened to the others?” Theo asked.
“Mr Cowboy was more of a threat than we thought. He killed the others but we made a deal with him. We won’t kill the hostages as long as we get to take the bonds. We also negotiated for you. You get your share of the bonds and make it out with the hostages. You avoid prison and death and leave here a rich man.” Hans explained.
“He killed them and you made a deal with him?” Theo asked, clearly not buying it.
“It was either risk losing everything we came for, risk dying or make a deal that benefited us all. I made the smart decision. Put your bonds in a bag and follow Me Cowboy here. He’ll take you to the other hostages. You’ll all be taken out to the car in the parking deck where he will get you all out of the building.” Hans said, motioning towards John who had just shown up.
“What about you and the girl?” Theo asked.
“I’ve hot wired many cars in my life Theo, I can get one of those cars working fairly quickly. I’ve been the face of this operation. If I try to leave with you and the other hostages they’ll rat me out before I hit the street. Me and Y/N need to leave separately.” He patted Theo’s shoulder. “You’ve done good my friend. This life isn’t for you, you’re a good person. You have all the money you need now, use it to get out of this life.”
Theo nodded and hugged him. “Be safe, I’m happy for you. I know this is what you wanted.” Hans smiled.
“You need to tell me where you end up. Call me on a payphone, send me a letter. I don't care. I need to know where my sister and niece are. I need to know you’re safe.” John pleaded as he stood in front of you.
“Johnny, I promise you I will let you know. You can visit, Eli would miss you too much. Just promise me you will explain all this to Holly, don’t let her hate me for this.”
“It might take her some time, but she could never hate you Y/N. I will do my best to explain this fucked up situation as best as I can. Be safe, contact me soon. I love you.” He kissed your forehead and walked away with Theo, leading him to the group. Hans was still stashing bonds in a sack until it was full then he moved to a second one.
“Alright, I think we have as much as we need. Time to head out Liebling.” He threw both bags over his shoulder and took your hand, leading you back to the elevator and the garage where he found an unlocked car and started working on hot wiring it.
“I never thought of you as the type to hot wire cars.” You chuckled as you watched him from the passenger seat.
“Really, and why’s that?” He chuckled.
“You just seem too proper for something like that. The car you picked me up in on our first date.”
“No, I bought that car….. Just with stolen money. I’m a criminal Liebling, nothing is too proper for me. The only crimes I wouldn’t commit are anything towards women. Ah ha!” Smiled when the cars engine started. “And we’re off Liebling. What’s the address so we can pick up our daughter?”
“She’s at my house with a sitter. The girl is only 15 and doesn’t watch the news so once we pay her and she leaves we’ll be free to pack whatever I’ll need and get Eli and go.” You tell him.
“You won’t have to pack much. Get yourself enough clothing for a few days and some hygiene products. I have your fake ID and passports. I have a new phone for you so go through your old phone and take out any numbers you need. But remember you can’t trust too many people if any. Grab any sentimental things like Eli’s photo’s or anything that can’t be replaced.” He instructed. “What’s your address?” You tell him the address and he sped as fast as he could without drawing too much attention. It was only a fifteen minute drive to your place. Once you pulled in you both got out of the car and you used the spare key from under the mat to get in.
“Alice, I’m back.” You called once entering the house so you didn’t startle her. You saw her pop her head from the living room.
“Hi Y/N. She’s been fine as always. She’s sleeping now.” Alice told you as she threw her bag over her shoulder.
“Thank you so much honey, here’s what I owe you. Enjoy your night, and honestly I’m going to be moving so I won’t be calling on you to babysit anymore, but I appreciate you.” You paid her the cash you owed her and sent her on her way.
“What do you need me to grab?” Hans asked.
“I need you to come with me.” You took his hand and led him to the nursery. Your daughter was sleeping in her crib. You watched as he looked at her in awe, like he wasn’t sure what to do or think. He only found out about her a few hours ago and he was fascinated by her. “Do you want to hold her?”
“I don’t want to wake her. She looks so peaceful.” He whispered.
“You can touch her Hans, she’s your daughter.” He nodded and reached over the side of the crib with one finger and put it in her little hand. She wrapped her tiny hand around his big finger. She couldn’t even fully wrap her hand around his finger. It was adorable to you. Hans smiled from ear to ear. “I’m gonna go pack her things and then a few of mine and then we can go.” You pecked his cheek and started gathering Eli’s things. Her diaper bag, some extra diapers, some of her clothes, toys and other things you would need to keep her calm during your journey. You went into your bedroom and grabbed a couple changes of clothes, and hygiene products for you and a few things you couldn’t just leave behind. Some photos, pieces of jewelry. After grabbing everything you needed you went back to the nursery and found Hans sitting in the rocking chair in the corner holding Eli against his chest.
“She started to stir, I thought it might calm her.” He told you when he saw you looking at him.
“It looks like it did. She looks just like you.” You added.
“She has my eyes, but she has your nose and those pretty pink cheeks that never need any blush.” He placed a gentle kiss on her hair.
“Hans, where will we go?” You asked after a moment of silence.
“Canada. It’s close enough they won’t think to look and it’s far enough that we’re out of the state… You hate the heat.”
“What?”
“You hate hot weather. You told me many times that you hate being too hot. You would say it was fine once in a while but you loved those cold days where you could curl up in a blanket and look out the window at the snowfall or be able to listen to the rain hit the window pains. You hate places that are all sunshine all the time because… Life isn’t like that, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows all the time. Canada will just you the weather you crave, that’s why I picked it.” He stood, holding Eli in one arm and pulling you by your waist against his chest.
“I can’t believe you remember all that.” You shook your head, on the verge of tears.
“I remember every moment I spent with you in vivid detail because those moments are the best of my life.” He leaned forward and kissed you passionately on the lips. “Do you have everything you need?”
“I do, we just need the car seat out of the garage for Eli.”
“I’ll get your bags, you get the seat because I know I won’t be able to put it in the car correctly, you’ll have to teach me.” He pecked your lips then started grabbing the bags in his free hand while still holding Eli in the other. You went to the garage and got the car seat put in the car just in time for Hans to come back out with Eli and get her situated in it. He opened your door for you then got in the driver's seat.
“This is it, everything we ever wanted.” You smiled as you took his hand.
“We deserve this, we’re going to be a perfect boring family. And our little girl back there is going to have all the love in the world. Ich liebe dich” He smile back at you.
“Ich liebe dich.” You repeated in a terrible German accent which made Hans chuckle.
“Don’t worry, I’ll teach you.” He assured you, bringing you hand to his lips and kissing it. “No turning back liebling, are you ready?”
“I don’t want to turn back, I only want you.”
You pulled out of the driveway and started the path to your new lives together. You never thought this would have been your life but your so happy it was. You loved him, he loved you and even though the road to each other was violent and chaotic you knew it was worth it.
The end.
