Q&A with Vidal Sassoon Creative and Colour Directors
At Beauty Nine to Five, we love getting the latest scoop from the best in the industry. Lorraine McAndrew, Creative Director and John Beeson, Colour Director, of Yorkvilleâs hot spot salon, Vidal Sassoon, chatted with us on the hottest hair trends for summer. From how to beat frizz to deciding to make a major hair chop, John and Lorraine filled us in on how to keep our hair looking great all summer long.
Beauty Nine to Five:Â What are the best ways to beat frizz during summer?
Lorraine McAndrew:Â If you have the time, let hair dry naturally or for as long as possible before using the hair dryer. The heat from styling tools can strip hair of moisture and add to frizz.
For curly or wavy hair, try a leave-in cream like Kérastase CrÚme Oléo-Curl to fight humidity and give curls shine. For straight or fine hair, use a lightweight leave-in conditioner spray to avoid strands from looking greasy and to keep hair moisturized without weighing it down.
Getting hair trimmed regularly will prevent the hair from splitting or breaking on its own.
BNTF:Â What are the top summer hair trends?
LM:Â Bobs have always been in fashion and itâs a great look for summer. Itâs a classic shape with many variations that work on just about all women. Theyâre also very easy to maintain which I know is important for many women.
Short cropped hair like Michelle Williamsâ short pixie cut is a favourite of mine too. Itâs so modern, fresh and easy-to-wear. I think weâll be seeing a lot more short hair for summer.
BNTF:Â What are the trends in hair colour for summer?
John Beeson:Â Weâre beginning to see less bold colours and moving towards soft shades of browns and blondes, like warm caramel browns and honey blondes. The red tones are more of a copper tone than a blood red.
Starting with an overall base colour, the colour is applied in staggered sections giving a natural suggestion of colour. This eliminates hard lines and helps to emphasize the shape of the cut. Itâs subliminal, blended, and natural.
BNTF:Â How can we protect our hair from becoming dry and brittle while out in the sun?
LM:Â The best way is to moisturize the hair with a leave-in treatment. Sassoon Salon offers three great treatment options that are tailored to the clientâs individual hair needs. This is a great way to start the summer with protected, moisturized, healthy hair.
Other ways to keep hair moisturized: Avoid overusing styling tools, such as flat irons, and to leave conditioner in a little longer than usual after shampooing.
BNTF:Â What are the key products that we should be using all summer long?
LM: Sebastian Potion 9 and Kérastase Elixir Ultime Oléo-Complexe are two great leave-in treatment products that are applied to towel-dried hair before it is blow dried or left to dry naturally.
Potion 9 is a conditioning and styling hybrid gel-like cream which adds shine to all hair types and decreases frizz. KĂ©rastase Elixir Ultime OlĂ©o-Complexe is a light-weight oil treatment that conditions hair and acts as both a heat protectant and finishing gloss to tame frizz. Hair is protected and moisturized and also helps to decrease frizz. Both are light enough so they donât weigh hair down or cause it to look greasy.
BNTF:Â Many celebrities have been making major hair transformations, like going from long to short and cropped, what should you think about when making a major hair decision like this?
LM:Â Believe it or not, all women can pull off a short hairstyle. Body shape and hair texture are minor factors when it comes to making the cut â the key is to be ready to make the change and to have the confidence to wear it proudly.
Going from long to short is like having a new wardrobe: existing clothes feel new and different and women tend to add more accessories like earrings or necklaces to accentuate the new, bold style.
The best thing about hair is that is grows back! If someone regrets their decision, we can help them figure out the best way to help them grow it out in a stylish way.
BNTF:Â How can we keep our colour looking vibrant while exposing it to the harsh effects of the sun and chlorine?
JB: The number one tip is to protect the hair from sun and chlorine exposure when you can. If you plan to be out in the sun or pool for a long period of time, wear a hat or bathing cap. If a hat or bathing cap is not your thing, the KĂ©rastase Soleil line has great leave-in conditioners and products that are designed to give the hair a protective barrier from the sunâs harsh effects. Use gentle shampoos specifically for colour-treated hair to protect your hair and your investment.
Most indoor and outdoor swimming facilities have showers so another great tip after swimming is to immediately rinse hair with cool, clean water. This will help to remove the chlorine before it causes damage.
