Berlin Carré is a building that knows its imminent future: it is to be closed and torn down next year. From November 17 to 23 the space occupied by Schneeeule is left empty and closed, and the exhibition is pushed out into the public spaces of the building. Taking the multiplex cinema as a template, the exhibition proposes a different use for the ageing shopping centre, with multiple films playing in certain locations across both floors of the building. The films are projected without pictures; just their soundtracks can be heard, forming localised pools of sound that overlap with the noise of daily life inside the Carré. The soundtracks are taken from various films made by Woody Allen; a prolific director whose films seem to exist primarily through their audible dimension, as a cinema of speech and music. Still active in his field, but neither trendy nor forgotten, Allen seems trapped in a time that is familiar but not present – similar to the Berlin Carré itself. In his films, and in the public imagination, Allen exists not only as an important director but also as a character; constant, but continually redefined in every film. This character, multiplied and fragmented, is used here to fill the building›s empty spaces. Another layer of audio fills the Berlin Carré a second time over: recordings of water in various states – the creaking of ice, the trickling of water running in streams and the rushing sound of steam – are played over the building›s PA system. These sounds of movement and of shape-shifting changes of state resonate through the indoor spaces accessible to the public. Like the multiplicity of characters played out in the film soundtracks, this second audio piece presents the building as fluid, with no fixed form, and points towards its future, yet to be defined.

François Morice is one of the many identities adopted by London artist Olivier Castel (*1982 in Paris) who often presents work under heteronyms, and has created over thirty different identities since 2001. The subject of this exhibition hinges on contemporary approaches to the perception of viewers, specifically as it relates to the pressing themes of the context of an artwork’s display, self-aware artistic expression, and the appropriation or manipulation of realities.

Es war kalt. Über uns, entlang des Highways, leuchteten die Scheinwerfer der Fahrzeuge durch den Abendhimmel. Wir fuhren

weiter, entlang einstöckiger Supermärkte, Autowerkstätten und Gebäuden, bei denen man nicht mehr sagen konnte welche Funktion

sie einmal hatten. Vor einem solchen Gebäude parkte Vaughn den Wagen. Auf der anderen Straßenseite warb ein Reiseveranstalter

mit einem tropischen Sonnenuntergang. Irgend jemand hatte einen Schwanz über die untergehende Sonne gezeichnet. Wir

stiegen aus, stießen die offene Eingangstüre auf und folgten einem kurzen Korridor. Es stank und wurde wurde immer kälter. Wir

betraten eine Art Wohnzimmer, in dem mehrere leere Resopalregale und ein altes Sofa standen, auf dem eine junge Frau in einem

Pelzmantel saß. Auf einem Monitor schräg hinter ihr lief ein alter Mann zwischen den Grabsteinen eines Friedhofs umher, seine

aufgeregte Stimme war nur schwer in Einklang mit den Bildern zu bringen. Sie selbst starrte in einen Fernseher auf einem kleinen

Tisch direkt vor ihr. Aufmerksam folgte sie den Bewegungen auf dem Bildschirm, was gezeigt wurde konnte ich nicht sehen, er

stand von mir abgewandt, aber es schien sie zu fesseln. Der Ton war abgestellt.

Ich betrachtete wie weiter. Sie trug einen Pagenschnitt und war hübsch. Ihre Beine ragten nackt aus dem Pelzmantel. Auf der

Innenseite ihrer Schenkel waren lange Narben, scharf gezackt und von einem viel dunkleren Ton als ihre blasse Haut. Als sie den

Kopf wendete wurden weitere Narben an ihrer Wange und Schläfe sichtbar. In der rechten Hand hielt sie eine Zigarette, mit der

linken streichelte sie eine kleine dünne Katze, deren Fell genau so schwarz war wie ihr Mantel. Sie bemerkte mein Starren, machte

aber keine Anstalten ihre Beine zu schließen. Neben ihr lehnte eine chromglänzende Krücke. Als sie sich bewegte, sah ich, dass

ihre Füße in metallenen Klammern einer chirurgischen Konstruktion befestigt waren. Aus der steifen Haltung ihres Oberkörpers

schloss ich, dass sie auch eine Art Rückenstütze tragen musste. An der Wand hinter ihr hing das Foto eines jungen Bodybuilders,

dessen Muskelberge einen interessanten Kontrast zu ihrem zerbrochenen Körper bildeten. Vaughn half ihr aufstehen, sie nahm ihre

Krücke und öffnete die Tür zum Nebenzimmer. Sie machte mir ein Zeichen ihr zu folgen.

Die kleine Kammer, in der wir uns jetzt befanden, hatte kein einziges Fenster. Etwas Licht spendeten ein paar Glühbirnen, die

an einer fragilen Konstruktion aus Stäben und Schnüren befestigt waren. Ich dachte an eine auseinandergefaltete Version ihrer

Stützen und Korsagen. Die Stäbe bewegten sich sacht. Die Wände schimmerten matt. Als ich mich einer Wand etwas näherte sah

ich überall Taschen und Reißverschlüsse. In einer Ecke lagen auf einem weißen Fell verschiedene schlanke, organische geformte

Objekte aus milchig-weißem Glas verstreut, als wären sie benutzt und danach nicht weggeräumt worden. Mit Hilfe ihrer Krücke

und indem sie sich an einer der Taschen in der Lederbespannung festhielt, lies sie sich auf dem Fell nieder, die Beine steif von

sich gestreckt, ihr Oberkörper an die Wand gelehnt. Ihr schwarzer Pelzmantel war jetzt offen und ich konnte eine weitere Spange

sehen, die ihren Körper unterhalb ihre Brüste umschloss. Ich setze mich neben sie. Wir küssten uns. Meine Hände wühlten in

ihren Haaren und in dem schimmernden Pelz, welcher sich wie eine Welle über ihrem Körper hob und senkte. Ich begann mich

durch die Schnallen und Halterungen unter ihrem Mantel zu tasten. Ihr Körper bestand aus Formationen aus Haut und Muskulatur,

Stützen und Prothesen, die ich mit einem Schaudern, das eigentlich Entzücken war, befühlte. Jede ihrer Deformationen rief neue

Erregung in mir hervor. Ihre Augen folgten ihrer Hand, die mein Gesicht und Kinn befühlten, als wäre sie auf der Suche nach

meinen eigenen fehlenden Gliedmaßen aus Stahl, Leder und Chrom. Sie hob ihren Fuß, so dass eine Spange mein Knie berührte.

Ich öffnete sie und befühlte die darunter liegende Haut. Sie war warm und fest und aufregender als jede andere Stelle ihres Körpers.

Ich erinnere mich erst wieder an den Augenblick, in dem ich Blut von meiner Hand tropfen sah und sie apathisch nach dem Bad

fragte. Langsam stand ich auf. Ich verließ das Haus durch den Korridor, vorbei an einem Poster, auf dem ein Motorrad mit rauchenden

A new balance has been struck between the practices of artist, curator, critic, et cetera. While the three practitioners Manuel Goliath, Pedro Wirz, and John Beeson are not the first to cut across multiple fields, they have resolved to bring the strategy to bear with the exhibition New Balance & Unfinished Business at the project space Hermes und der Pfau.

“New Balance & Unfinished Business” draws inspiration from life’s pastimes and pleasures, the experience of relating to others, and quasi-objective reflections on quality and meaning in art. The artists’ versatile practices will be reflected here by a teetering mélange of objects and activities whose only sure quality is their relation to art. The exhibition itself will be a continuously evolving admixture of projects – at times artistic, curatorial, creative, and documentary. Over the course of the exhibition, the artists will present evidence of their past projects as well as new curatorial exercises and a changing series of their own works. Moreover, the artists invite visitors to return to the project space again and again and again during the month of April to take part in a variety of events. Neither simply performances nor festivities, these events intend to prolong and develop the viewers’ engagement.

For ‘Critical Conditions’ (15.04.2010 at 7 pm) the three artists and the co-founders of Hermes und der Pfau – Philipp Ziegler and Anne-Sofie Ruckhaberle – will reenact the conversation depicted in John Beeson’s video work. Following the combined screening and reading, the public will be invited to openly critique the exhibition.

Later in the month with ‘Hanging Out at Hermes und der Pfau’ (22.04.2010 at 7 pm), the artists will turn the project space into a place to hang out, talk, and listen to a music podcast DJ’ed by collaborators living outside of Stuttgart. For twenty-four straight hours during ‘24h Kino’ (24.04.2010 at 7 pm until 25.04.2010 at 7:00pm), visitors to the project space will be able to watch the new releases playing in movie theaters around Stuttgart.
