Summer is here and it is time to protect your skin from those harmful UV rays! Many people I know skip sunscreen. However, it is one of the most important steps that should be done within your daily skincare routine. The sun can create dark spots and increase pigmentation within scars. Also, if you already use a vitamin C or a brightening skincare product, it is particularly important for you to use sunscreen. Those products make your skin more susceptible to absorbing UV rays and increase the chances of you getting negative effects onto your skin. The biggest issue for me is the common stickiness that you get when you apply sunscreen. However, I have found a couple of sunscreens that can easily be absorbed into the skin, do not have the slick finish and is extremely strong against UV rays!

This DIY mask is excellent for dry or acne-prone skin. Oatmeal contains anti-inflammatory properties and acts as a light exfoliator. As cosmetic brands are getting more conscience about the ingredients going into their products, going vegan is more beautiful than it ever has been before. Vidushi Pandya, senior makeup artist talks to us about this alluring beauty trend.

Vidushi works with hundreds of cosmetic brands whether they are vegan or not. She believes a lot more skincare and makeup brands are offering more cruelty free options to cater to the increasing demand from consumers. She says consumers including herself are becoming more aware of what is being applied onto their skin and adds, “At the end of the day, when clients are shopping for makeup or myself included, I look for things that are going to be beneficial and not going to be harmful for my skin”.

Why is this important? Over time harmful ingredients can cause hair thinning in the eyebrow area or cause sensitivity, Vidushi tells us.  Additionally, going the cruelty-free route may ease your conscience a bit, knowing your product didn’t harm any innocent creatures while in testing.

What was once known as Suzanna Chun Beauty, a beauty company specializing in bridal hair,make-up and lash extensions, has recently rebranded themselves as Tori Blush. Founder and Principal Artist, Suzanna Chun, and her team of beauty experts have been sharing their expertise with Vancouver’s brides for the past 10 years. With a goal of building authentic artist-client relationships, and providing every bride with the beauty look of their dreams come their big day, Tori Blush’s service is what sets them apart from other similar companies.

Along with the company’s rebranding, Suzanna has also established the Tori Blush Academy for lash extension certification. This means that other artists will now be able to educate themselves on the art through the Academy, effectively expanding their beauty repertoire.

When asked about her motivations and visions for her company, Suzanna shared: “Tori Blush was created to be a hub for all things beauty and a place for other Artists to grow and shine! Part of my vision for this company is to share the knowledge and expertise I have gained through my experiences with other Artists.” Beauty Nine to Five had a chance to chat with Suzanna about work, beauty, and her personal inspirations. Here’s what she had to say:

Beauty Nine to Five: What inspired you​​ to go into the beauty field?​

Suzanna Chun: As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved makeup and anything relating to beauty and fashion. My mom was definitely ​the driving force and inspiration​ behind my love for beauty because she loved it too! Not only that, my mom was an artist as well, (a florist!) so I think it was just in my blood to be creative. I don’t think it was until​ my university​ days​ that I ​realized being into makeup wasn’t just a phase. I ​became the go to beauty girl ​for all my friends and remember ​spending ​our all-nighter “study” sessions shaping their brows, teaching them how to ​make their lips look bigger using lip liners (they were big back then​, pre-lip injections!​) and how to​ use all the products in their makeup bags. ​Though I graduated university with an Economics degree and worked in banking and finance for several years before pursuing makeup + hair professionally, it was always a huge part of my life!​

BNTF: When it comes to owning your own business, getting started is usually the hardest step.  How did you manage to turn your freelance career into a business like Tori Blush?

SC: I​ think it was a combination of determination, perseverance and timing. The freelance makeup artist industry is highly saturated and making a name for yourself in it can seem like the most daunting of tasks. I certainly felt that way when I first started out. I was fortunate ​enough to have graduated from Blanche Macdonald during a time when most of my friends were starting to get married. My friends became my first clients and I started my professional portfolio with their weddings. From there, I created a website and did everything and anything I could to get exposure and experience. I worked for free, did trade for print shoots to build my portfolio, I practiced on anyone who would let me, and slowly but surely, I started getting more and more work.

Referrals were a main source of my business as one happy bride would lead to all her friends wanting to use me for their big day, too. Though Tori Blush had always been a dream, it could only be birthed once the demand for my services was more than I could handle on my own. Not only that, it meant having to find other artists who wanted to work with me and be a part of my team! This process didn’t happen overnight, it took 10 years to get here. I also had 2 kids in between the mix so, it was definitely slow growing during my babies first formidable years. ​

BNTF:  What was one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced to date when it comes to running your own business?

SC: Staying self motivated. With a freelance career or running your own business, you have to be self motivated to grow your business and clientele. Work doesn’t just find you… you have to hustle and grind to find it. Your survival as a freelance Artist depends on it! As a business owner, I don’t have a boss managing me or my time because I am the boss. With the nature of the bridal business being seasonal, I had to find ways of earning an income during slower seasons. It took making a conscious decision everyday to do something productive to grow my business, whether or not I had clients lined up for the day. My career started with working less than 10 weddings a year to now having several clients every single day with zero days off for weeks at a time. The entrepreneurial mind never rests either, so on days when I’m not working with clients, I’m still working on the next thing… whatever it may be at the time!

BNTF: What do you look for when hiring artists for Tori Blush?

​SC: I’m looking for Artists with passion and personality. Techniques in makeup artistry and hair design can be taught, but I can’t teach people how to have passion or a personality that is magnetic. They just have it! I also look for people who are motivated, professional and fun to be around – we can’t be too serious all the time!

BNTF:  If you could give aspiring beauty professionals one piece of advice, what would it be?

​SC: Don’t give up! If you love the beauty industry and know you want to be a part of it, do anything and everything you can to hone and sharpen your skills. Reach out to an Artist you admire and ask if you can follow them on jobs, even if it means being there just to clean their brushes. Be humble and willing to assist in any capacity. You can learn so much from watching a professional Artist in their element, not just from the practical side of applying makeup, but also from observing their professionalism and how they interact with their clients. Those lessons are invaluable! Lastly, whatever it is you do in the beauty industry, do it with excellence.

It can be hard to escape the contour war stripes many of us may come across on Instagram but it isn’t the only method of contouring. Here we gathered some of the hottest must have contouring products that will help you achieve a perfect chiseled look, no matter what the occasion is.

A powder contour can create a soft or dramatic look. It’s also ideal for daily use. With the different shades offered in kits you can play around with the shades that will suit you best. If some of the colours provided are too light or too dark, simply use these on your eyes as eye shadows.

When contouring, simply follow your face shape and hallows of your cheeks, don’t strive to try and recreate your face. Add the contour colour close to your hairline on your forehead, then sweep your brush from the edge of your ear down to the middle of your cheek. Brush a little bit of the contour powder on the sides of your nose to define it more too!

The right brush is the key to contouring. This double-ended brush makes it easy to sweep on your shade and each side is labeled telling you what each side should be used for. The brush picks up the right amount of product while giving you the perfect precision. When using this brush try the directional blending technique. This is when you sweep product in one direction without sweeping it back and forth; this will avoid your contour from looking muddy.

It’s exciting when you land an interview from an employer you’ve anticipated hearing from. Looking the part is just as important as being the part so our founder, Christie Lohr, tells us what the do’s and don’ts are when it comes to job interview makeup. See what she shares with us below.

Q: Why should one look polished when attending a job interview? First impressions are everything?

Christie Lohr: First impressions are everything, which is why it is so important to make standing out a priority. Employers can interview over a handful of candidates in a day, so its crucial to catch their eye – from what you wear to how your hair and makeup is done. It’s all about making a lasting, positive impression that will help you against the competition. 

Q: What type of impression does a person who is well put together give at a job interview? 

CL: When a candidate has taken the time, energy and effort to appear polished and put together, it sends a message to the employer that you care and are willing to go the extra mile. It shows that enthusiasm and commitment is something you’ll also be putting forth in the role. 

Q: What type of makeup do you advise wearing during a job interview? 

CL: Be the best version of you with natural, day appropriate makeup. Opt for a sheer, tinted moisturizer to avoid any cakey-looking foundation or the appearance of being too made up. You still want to feel confident and comfortable with your look, so don’t try anything new or experiment with your regular routine. 

Q: What are some tips you’d like to share for our readers who usually don’t wear makeup at all? 

CL: Since less is more, adding a little bit extra is easy and effortless. Focus on your best features and highlight one area at a time. If you opt for a bolder lip, keep your eyes subdued and vice versa. You can’t go wrong with a strong, sculpted brow, curled, defined lashes with a lengthening mascara, a flush of colour on the cheeks with blush and for those who like a natural glow all year ‘round, a bit of bronzer will bring your face to life. For me, these are the everyday essentials that make up my very own “no-makeup” look. 

Q: What are the do’s when it comes to doing your own makeup for a job interview? 

CL: Since you’ll be making eye contact, focus on pretty eyes! Check your face in natural light before you leave to make sure there’s no visible lines or creases and that everything is blended flawlessly. A huge faux paux is lipstick on the teeth, so triple check that none of your lipstick or lip colour has rubbed off on your pearly white, or worse bled past your lip lines! Another pet peeve of mine is chipped nails. Either paint them in a nice neutral, subdued colour or have them trimmed, polished and finished with a clear topcoat. 

Q: What are the don’ts when it comes down to job interview makeup?  

CL: I would steer clear of anything too heavy. Avoid doing a smokey eye and wearing too much eyeliner. Also, too much highlight shimmer or bronzer can become distracting. Over spritzing perfume or any fragrance mist should be avoided as well. You never know if the interviewer has allergies or any sensitivity to strong scents.

For me, the worse thing to wake up to is bad bed hair.  My hair gets tangled and is curled left to right. Unfortunately, I am also not particularly skilled at using heat styling tools either. So I am often left with having to put my hair up in some sort of updo to hide the messy ends.

Thus, here are my top favourite hairstyles to do when I have bad hair days! These updos are extremely easy to do and do not require any heating tools.

Milkmaid Braid Updo

You can wear it messy for a more casual look or sleek for a dressier occasion. The good thing about this hairstyle is that it looks like you spent a lot of time on it. But in reality, this updo is super easy to do and does not require much effort. If you think your hair is too short to bring the braid over the top of the head, just simply do an “ upside down” version where you bring the braids across the bottom!

All you need to do is:

• Split your hair down the middle and braid/french braid both sides to create pigtails.

• Classic method: Bring each braid over the top of the head and secure with bobby pins.

• Upside down method: Bring each braid across the lower back of your head and secure with bobby pins.

Top Knot

This is probably everyone’s go-to lazy hairstyle. It gathers all of your messy hair up into a bun and out of your face! Wear it messy for an effortless look or make it sleek for a more polished look. If you are going for the messy look, it is good to tease the hair prior to spinning it into a bun. However, if you want it to be neat, try using a hair donut to make the perfect shape.

All you need to do is:

• Gather all of your hair into a high ponytail.

• Messy Top Knot: Take a fine tooth comb and tease the ponytail to create volume. Spin and wrap the ponytail around the elastic band. Then, take another elastic and wrap it around a few times to secure it. If needed, use bobby pins!

• Sleek Top Knot: Brush through the ponytail to make sure it’s tangle-free. Then, take a hair donut and pull your hair through the hole. Taking your ponytail, wrap it around the donut and secure the ends with an elastic band. If needed, use bobby pins!

Single French Braid

This hairstyle is an absolute classic and very easy to do once you get the hang of doing it! Many people tend to stray away from french braiding because it looks so difficult. However, once you master this technique you can easily use this trick to hide bad hair! The braids tuck all your messy ends into one neat braid.

All you need to do is:

• Take a 3-4 inch wide section of hair from the top center of your head and split into 3 pieces.

• Like a traditional braid, begin by crossing the “ right” section over the center strand. Then, take the “left” section and cross it over the center.

• Then, begin to incorporate other pieces of hair into the braid by grabbing some from the sides of your head and adding it into to the cross-over.

• Continue until you have gathered all the hair from both sides of your head into one single french braid.

• Secure the end with an elastic band.
