Golden Age/Earth 2 Catwoman sketch by legendary Joe Staton from HeroesCon. #heroescon #heroescon2017 #sketch #catwoman #joestaton #dccomics #batman
“The Forgotten Shadow of the Bat in the 1980s” - 1983: “The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne!”: Many are fans of Batman and Catwoman being a romantic item since their first interaction in 1940s Batman issue 1. For a brief period in the early 1950s, Selina Kyle reformed, returning to a life of the Cat in Batman (Vol 1) 84 in June 1954. Yet thanks to the Comics Code Authority, she was absent from Batman comics until 1966, more so due to her popularity in the live action television series ‘Batman’. The flirtatious tension between the Bat and the Cat played throughout the campy show and would be imagined in several books in the late 1970s and early 1980s. One Earth-2 (a universe belonging to Golden Age DC Comics characters) tale was Alan Brennert and Joe Staton’s April 1983’s Brave and the Bold (Vol 1) 197, “The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne”, which dives deeper into Batman and Catwoman’s desire for companionship. Set in 1955, when Bruce attends the wedding of Linda Page, a past love interest, Scarecrow crashes the party and spreads his fear toxins, which Batman inhales. Robin then realizes Bruce’s biggest fear: being alone. When he finds no one to speak with (Alfred’s missing, even Clark (Superman) isn’t home), he turns to his reformed foe Selina, who understands his pain and decides to aid him as Catwoman in helping track down Scarecrow. In the process, Batman tells Catwoman that he became the Dark Knight after his parents were murdered when he was 10. Then, Selina reveals that she lied about the plane crash giving her amnesia (stated in Batman (Vol 1) 62 from 1950). In reality, she was the wife of a wealthy but abusive husband. Once she divorced him, he decided to ruin her financially. One night she robbed him of his jewels and valuables and from then on she continued to be a jewel thief, taking up the identity as Catwoman. She made up the story for a chance to reform, start over and hopefully settle down and have a family, to not be alone. In the end Bruce and Selina remove their masks and embrace, knowing they won’t have to suffer alone behind a guise anymore. Brennert brings us another Batman tale in this 80s retrospect that puts focus on the man behind the cowl.
