To Serge Silberman
Mexico City, 17 July 1973
My dear Serge, First of all, thank-you for the advance on profits from The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie. Iâve already written to the Transatlantique asking them to transfer the 45,000 francs to the CIC. Following Jacquelineâs instructions, Iâve left the rest, so the account doesnât go into the red.
I got your long letter with the contract attached, and I accept without further discussion, if I manage to make the film, although at the moment the thought of such a prospect horrifies me. I have no desire to work and still less to leave my home and live in a hotel for several months. Please consider this a very serious decision.
As for my health, it is sorting itself out more or less. I certainly donât need eminent international experts to examine me anyway. There are some very good specialists here in Mexico too. And above all, staying at home is the best remedy there is.
I told you not to send Jean-Claude over. I would have preferred to wait until the Autumn, because by then Iâll know where I stand with a lot of things that I wonât go into now. You say Iâm stubborn, but you ⌠In any event, do whatever you like. Iâm not making any promises, even if, right in the middle of our joint efforts, work has to stop, and âpoorâ Jean-Claude has to return to Paris empty-handed.
You may not believe me, but I am perfectly content with my current state of inactivity and, trust me, have no need to ruminate on my more-or-less imaginary illnesses.
As for the wonderful bottles you are saving for me, Rodolfo says you could send them to me âcare ofâ him without an import licence. As soon as the courier confirms their arrival at customs, I am to let Rodolfo know and he will make sure they get to my house without the import duty. He also took the opportunity to say that President EchevarrĂa is sending me a case of bottles from his stock. Iâm not joking.
I will be truly delighted to see you in Mexico again.
With much affection, Luis

Mom isnât gonna let her take you. I donât know, sheâs pretty mad at me. It doesnât matter! Youâre in our family now. You canât leave. Family sticks together.
Caught Being Good
Thereâs a new show on ABC called Emergence. Itâs been out for a month now and weâre now waiting on Episode 5. But Iâm not going to talk about the show itself too much in this post.
I want to talk about Sheriff Jo Evans, the main adult character.
This is Jo.
She is played by Allison Tolman.
Jo Evans is not only a woman in a âmanâs jobâ as sheâs in law enforcement. Sheâs not disrespected as a woman nor has she had to be âmore manâ than any of the men to get to where she is (sheriff of her department). Everyone of her underlings that sheâs interacted with has treated her as the boss without hesitation or worry about how sheâll react about something.
She is also very clearly a mother, without any of the stereotypes of being bad at it due to stereotypical masculine traits. She is balancing both as well as being on good terms with her ex-husband. Oh, yeah, did I mention that sheâs divorced? And while we donât know why yet, it does not seem to be due to her job or her weight.
Speaking of her weight, Jo is obviously full figured. Tolman has curves. Sheâs not some stick-figure GI Joe-knockoff. At the risk of being offensive, sheâs fat.
But thatâs never once mentioned or references in her interactions, even with her doctor friend. She isnât seen being obsessed with food, neither dieting or overeating. She is shown running around and is no more winded than her thinner comrades. She fights and is just as flexible as her opponents. She doesnât eat different things than her family, participating in sloppy joe night as well as enchilada night. Both of which are apparently appealing enough to her coworkers to want an invitation.
Jo Evansâ weight is not a plot point or recurring joke. Neither is her gender.
So, Iâve caught ABC being good. Emergence shows on Tuesdays at 9pm CST and will be back on October 29th.
not to make it all about the âship but EVANS/BROOKS. i mean, that kiss! against the wall! the banter and the tension!! the entire scene!!
