Yesterday’s episode hits especially hard when you’ve seen Ash’s journey from the start. I was a kid, somewhere between 8-10 years old, when they started showing OS in my country. I was there when Ash got what the fandom likes to call ‘pity badges’, was roasted by his pokedex, Pikachu and his companions because he knew so little about Pokémon, and couldn’t make his Charizard obey even once when he would have needed it the most, getting booed by the audience.
I “returned” to this fandom over 6 years ago when Ash was getting close to the Kalos league, and I’m so glad I did it. I got to witness him raising from Kanto’s top 16 to Johto and Hoenn’s top 8 to Sinnoh’s top 4 to (um, we don’t talk about the Unova league) Kalos league runner-up to FINALLY the Alola champion and now, top 8 in the world. But I don’t think he’s only grown as a trainer, he has also grown as a person. He was pretty arrogant at first, sometimes even putting his own success before his Pokémon’s needs (but it’s still important to note that he has always cared about his Pokémon deeply. It’s just that he’s a kid and we all make mistakes). In the past few series he has clearly gotten a lot humbler (remember his reaction to winning Gladion and Kukui. The first being like “huh? Did this really just happen? And the second being like ‘head empty, I’m just gonna lay here for a while’), but that showed especially well in the newest episode when the audience started cheering for him. He couldn’t quite wrap his head around the fact that these people were really rooting for /him/, their /champion/. And boy, I was so proud of him in that moment :’) Our Ash has gotten so so far from the OS era and it was about time that he was celebrated!
