Guzma legitimately trying to be a good parental figure to Gladion because the kid clearly needs one, but to say he has no idea how because of the way he was raised would probably be an understatement. I'd imagine an angsty teenager rebellion argument would probably go something like this:

Guzma: "'Ey! You watch that rude little mouth of yours, young man! You're lucky I'm not breakin' off a nine iron in your ass like my dad would've!"
