Meet Jeff Churchill, he is a shoemaker for the film and theatre industries. He also runs a shop named Jitterbug Boy, where they make custom footwear for productions all over the world! Jeff is sharing Oh The Places You’ll Go! By Dr. Seuss.
It’s a story about “the adventure that we call living. We all go on our own distinct journeys but they all share common threads. Going exciting places, meeting interesting people, trying, failing, trying again. Getting past fears and finding small happinesses along the way.”
If this book were a time machine, where and when would it take him?
“Honestly, it would probably take me to my mid-twenties, when I was at the lowest point in my life. It was an incredibly difficult time in my life. What I didn't realize at the time was that it wasn't the end of the story - it was just one of those two-fold pages where things go wrong. I'm sure if Dr. Seuss was there, he would have happily pointed out that I was only part way through my book. I'm on to some of the more adventurous pages of the book in my life now.”
What do you hope the next reader gets from this book?
“I don't remember reading any book when I was a kid that so plainly said - look, things are going to be good and they are going to be bad. That's part of life. The bad times just make the good shine that little bit brighter. That's what I hope they get out of the book. And an appreciation for the drawings, Dr. Seuss was a genius artist.”
Why is reading important?
“Reading helps the imagination. What you picture from a paragraph of words and what I imagine will be completely different. You always have to paint inside your head the scenes that are going on on the page...whatever story you read will become uniquely yours, you will imagine it in your own way based on your own experience. We need more of that.”
