I wonder if different colours Jennamite have different flavours.
I have decided Sokka would taste like blueberry and Katara like green apple.
Only the green apple would be the artificial flavour that candy tends to have, so no one in the ATLA univers would actually recognise it as such except for King Bumi. He refers to Katara as ‘Sour Apple’ for the rest of her life. Nobody understands why.
For some reason this incident results in Sokka faintly smelling/tasting like blueberry for the rest of his life. It’s just never mentioned cuz it’s not relevant to Aangs journey and smellevision is not invented yet.
Here is a pre-Zutara moment. Thanks @zutaraweek and remember if you’re enjoying these then check out the Steam series! Links in my bio.
A month after the Earth King’s son was born, there was a celebration. Being who they were, the entire group had been invited to Ba Sing Se. It was tense for Zuko to attend, as it had only been two years since the Earth Kingdom had moved to keep him from being coronated. He was unsure of going, but his uncle assured him that it would be good to remind the Earth Kingdom what he had done to end the war.
So Zuko was packed up with the loads of gifts and the sizeable retinue. Mai, finally understanding that being the future Fire Lady meant she would have to attend state functions, also went to her dressing appointments.
She complained the entire time, but at least she went.
The only saving grace for Zuko was that he would at least see all of his friends at the same time. The last time that had happened was at the signing of the Treaty of Yu Dao four years earlier.
Sokka had been to the palace multiple times over the years, sometimes bringing Suki along. Toph would stop by for meetings, to discuss the future ventures of the nationalized metal industry in his country. She never stayed for long, and she spent most of her free time with Iroh, but the visits were still enjoyable.
Aang and Katara had visited once a year. At first, the Avatar and the descendent of the previous Avatar met for Avatar day. They celebrated in the Fire Nation while Suki and Sokka stayed in Kyoshi. The dinners were awful, as Mai and Katara often clashed, but the nights when Mai excused herself early were filled with laughter.
As they boarded the airship to travel to Ba Sing Se, Zuko glanced at Mai. When they were somewhere she felt uncomfortable, she often demanded that he stay with her. It was understandable, but he was hoping to spend time with his oldest friends.
During the trip, Zuko stayed up drinking tea and playing Pai Sho with Iroh. They were silent for the most part, both of them just enjoying each other’s company.
“Uncle.” Zuko started as Iroh slid a tile across the grid.
“Mmm.” Iroh intoned and pulled at his beard while he sat back.
“How was it, being married?” Zuko asked. For once, Iroh actually looked surprised and he looked up, one hand still on his beard.
“Excuse me?” Iroh said and Zuko didn’t look up as he pushed a tile across the board.
“You don’t talk much about Mizu.” He replied. After Iroh was silent for a minute and hadn’t approached the board, Zuko looked up. Iroh’s gaze was distant and Zuko frowned, worried he had offended his uncle.
“Mizu was selected for me by your father’s mother.” Iroh finally said and continued to stroke his beard. “They were two of a kind.”
“No one has ever talked about Tamiko either.” Zuko countered. Iroh sighed and touched a tile.
“Your grandmother was, well. She raised your father didn’t she?” He answered.
“So why did you marry Mizu?” Zuko asked.
“Because she brought with her a plantation in the Earth Kingdom and a clan of warriors.” Iroh stated bluntly. “She was a good wife for the crown prince.” He placed his tile and Zuko sighed.
“What is bothering you nephew?” Iroh questioned. Zuko reclined back in his seat and grabbed his tea cup.
“Has there ever been a happily married Fire Lord?” He asked in return. For once, Iroh didn’t have an answer.
When they landed, Zuko was relieved to find out they had been the last to arrive. So instead of an Earth Kingdom welcome party, he instead was greeted to Sokka walking up the ramp.
“Good to see you brother.” Sokka murmured as they embraced. Zuko patted Sokka’s back and felt himself relax a little. When they parted, Sokka gave a quick salute to Mai. “Lady Mai, always a pleasure.”
“I’m sure.” Mai replied sarcastically as she walked past them. Sokka shot Zuko a look and he only shook his head. The two men followed her and Sokka threw an arm around Zuko’s shoulders.
At the end of the ramp was the rest of them. Mai hung back, standing next to the ramp, as Sokka and Zuko went to the others. Aang and Zuko hugged while Toph came up and slapped his shoulder.
“Good to see you Melon Lord.” Toph said with a grin.
Then there was Katara.
As she smiled warmly at him, Zuko felt the rest of his stress fall away. After they hugged, Katara held onto one of his forearms and took something out of her pocket.
“Remember the last time we were here?” She asked and Zuko flinched.
“I’d rather not.” He admitted and Katara chuckled. She held out her hand and Zuko opened one to take what she had. Into his palm, she dropped a chunk of green crystal.
“It’s not from the catacombs. I thought we should have a different memory of some crystals.” She said and stepped back. “It’s jennamite.”
“What’s that?” Zuko asked and looked as Sokka burst into laughter. He looked back and the crystal creaked as it grew an extra inch in length.
“Creeping crystal.” Katara said fought with a smile in an attempt to look serious. “Another instance of when I almost died in crystals.” Zuko looked bewildered as she finally started to giggle.
“I’ll take the catacombs then, thanks. At least then we…” Zuko cut himself off and saw Aang give him a curious look.
“I know, I know, we had a moment. But Bumi brought this as a gift and I immediately thought of you.” Katara said.
“She chipped off a piece th size of my finger an hour ago.” Sokka added. Zuko frowned as the crystal grew in size again.
“This is alarming.” He stated.
“It’s candy!” Katara said, a laugh half caught in her words. When Zuko still stared at it, she sighed and took it from him. “Look.” He watched as Katara snapped off a shard and popped it into her mouth, chewing hard on the crystal.
“It’s sweet.” She said.
“I’ll have to trust you.” Zuko replied. Katara rolled her eyes as she sighed again. She snapped off another piece and held it out to him.
“Just try it!” She said and waved the morsel at him.
“No thank you. How do you know it doesn’t grow inside of you?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. It’s candy. It’s harmless!”
“I’m not really into sweets.”
“Now that’s a lie. I’ve seen you go after a dessert tray.”
“I just don’t think-” Zuko stopped as Katara shoved the bit of candy into his mouth. The crystal dissolved slightly on his tongue and he could taste a bubbly sweetness. But it was the taste of her fingertips that caused his heart to jump into his throat.
With only a slight blush, Katara pulled her hand back and handed him the rest of the jennamite.
“For the love of atka, you didn’t need to force feed him Katara!” Sokka exclaimed and Zuko only stared, chewing the candy slowly. The siblings squabbled back and forth and Mai came to stand next to him.
“That was rude.” She stated and peered down at the crystal. “Aren’t you going to offer me some?”
~
Zuko sat out in the hall, unable to sleep. Instead, he sat with one fat candle, looking down at the crystal in his hand.
He heard Iroh approach but didn’t look up. The older man groaned as he sat down on the floor and sighed softly when he leaned his back against the wall.
“You should eat that before it grows out of control.” Iroh said and Zuko heaved a large sigh, causing the candle flame to jump in size.
“Here.” Zuko said and offered it up. Iroh took it, broke it in two, and handed half back to Zuko.
“There has never been a happily married Fire Lord.” Iroh stated and crunched on the crystal. Zuko tilted his head from side to side, examining the crystal. “But there has never been a Fire Lord like you.”
Zuko looked over and watched his uncle’s jaw work as he chewed the jennamite.
“How do I even know what to do? I’ve never seen a happy husband and wife.” He said. Iroh swallowed and shrugged.
“You let sweetness grow. Like that crystal, it will grow and fill your life.” He said and Zuko looked back at the candy. It grew again.
“But you will need to eat that before it becomes a problem.” Iroh added and Zuko laughed softly.
what i want to know about avatar: how the fuck does jennamite work.
could you use it as an endless supply of sugar?
how does it keep growing?
where does it get the extra mass?
does it get it from a person's chi or something?
is there any other substance that can do that?
if it is because of chi, could people learn how to create other things that can be multiplied by chi?
even if it basically is just candy i feel like these are questions that people in universe should take more seriously
