Jenever was developed in the Netherlands during the 16th and 17th centuries. Originally used for medicinal purposes, the drink was flavored with juniper berries and became popular among Dutch soldiers and sailors.
British troops encountered jenever during wars in the Low Countries and later brought similar drinks back to England. Over time, this evolved into modern gin. Today, many historians consider Dutch jenever the ancestor of one of the world's most famous alcoholic beverages.
One Dutch drink helped inspire a global industry.
