Contains spoilers for X-Men Age of Apocalypse Alpha if you haven’t read it yet!!!
I love the art and writing so far, but I’m not sure about the mutual implied romantic tension between Rogue and Gambit, especially that Rogue seems to be second-guessing her choice marrying Magneto and having a family with him. I suppose it’s based off the original AoA canon where they had a moment before Blink interrupted, but this is supposed to be long after they defeated Apocalypse in their timeline. I am hoping the writers won’t go for another Romy endgame or something because they are already canon in the main timeline, but I guess we will see what happens.
Hi Anon!
I found the comic alright, but the writing to me was a bit on the weak side. The original AoA they had a moment, before Remy left on his mission. Rogue was very stoutly in love with Magneto throughout, aside from that moment.
Further, to save the multiverse, Gambit sacrificed his love for Rogue to gain a portion of the M'Kraan Crystal so they could complete the mission they were sent on.
The story was alright, but really, why would the X-Men believe Sinister whole cloth? Who was killed by Nate Grey after Sinister killed Forge, who figured out he was spying on their traveling troupe in the original run of X-Man (1-4). Perhaps these X-Men will turn the tide, as they aren't THAT gullible, but we'll see.
Further, Scott was murdered by his brother Havok, after Havok shot Jean in the back. Alex was then killed by Logan, who stabbed him in the back. I don't know how or why Alex was about to marry Polaris, and how the X-Men (or Creed) killed her on their wedding day, since Polaris was half-insane and freed in the pens by Scott pretending to be Magneto.
Loeb was either playing fast and loose with the lore, or he's leaving seeds to let us know that reality is messed up. Perhaps they're in a pocket universe, or traveled to one? I don't think this is Earth-295, though. Maybe Earth-29501, or Earth-295.1.a sub-category XMN.
It'd be disappointing if it ends Romy...especially since it doesn't jive with their weak 2005 revisit. But we'll see...
The comic was pretty, if a bit confusing in its actions.
Thanks for writing in Anon, and happy travels!
