Respect the Jedi Way and the Mandalorian Way, *please*
Minor rant incoming but... sigh. Why is it so hard to find decent Mandalorian fanfic that respects both Din Djarinâs Creed/ Mandalorian Way, and Luke Skywalkerâs Jedi way? (Genfic included.)Â
There are several excellent blogs that can be helpful for understanding the Jedi Order in a canon context: look up @gffa @david-talks-sw and @jedi-order-apologist for starters. I particularly like this discussion I read on the latterâs blog. (I.e. this is a disclaimer saying there are many, many other bloggers out there who say things better than I can.)
Fanfic writers, youâre putting your own words in Lukeâs mouth, your own Fanon Interpretation, when you have him say the âOld Waysâ of the Jedi were wrong. Especially if Luke justifies it by saying that it was âhis bonds with his friends/ attachments/ etc. that saved him in the endâ. Thatâs a complete misinterpretation of canon - the Original Trilogy and the Prequels, and even the way the Mandalorian show canon explains things (see Chapter 13 and Chapter 16 - even if they rely a bit too much on subtext/ audience knowledge to phrase it).Â
Look, I get it. This stuff can be confusing. When I first got into Star Wars, I was heavily into this sort of fanon interpretation too. But itâs just that: fanon. This is why research is important, folks, especially for long-form fic! (I mean this kindly.)Â
You might diss me here and say, âitâs my fic and Iâll write how I want it!â, which is fine. It just feels like, a lot of the time, the Fanon Interpretation is held up by fic writers as the One True Interpretation. Can we have some more diversity, please?Â
