JayWood – SUN BABY

The Manitoban multigenre artist Jeremy Haywood-Smith, known professionally as JayWood began his musical journey writing ‘sad songs’ before discovering funk music, which led to delightfully catchy, synth-layered albums like his 2019 debut Time and 2022 album Slingshot, which was long listed for the Polaris Music Prize the following year.

In the intervening time since his last album, Jeremy has moved base from Winnipeg to Montreal and is busy with his third album Leo Negro, set for release on 5 September. The album is to take a much more expansive and experimental approach to his music, lyrically a journal exploring the different sides to himself, and musically drawing from some of the softer influences on his past work.

After releasing ‘BIG TINGS’ with the band Tune-Yards, JayWood released the latest single from the upcoming album on Thursday, ‘SUN BABY’. It is the most spacey and experimental of the album so far, drenched in layered harmonies, acoustic guitars and pianos. “It’s me at my most honest,” Jeremy says. “But to approach the album like this I needed to write from different versions of myself. I’ve intentionally split the brain through each song which has made it more cohesive than my scatterbrain music mentality of just writing everything I’m into and expecting it to make sense.”

Winnipeg, Manitoba -- JayWood, the project of  Jeremy Haywood-Smith, will be releasing his upcoming album Slingshot on July 15 via Captured Tracks. This week, he shared the album’s penultimate track “Thank You,” a bright song that spans just under 4 minutes long. From the uplifting instrumental to the positive lyrics, “Thank You” is an ode to those who are no longer in Haywood-Smith’s life but also a celebration of the past and what’s to come. With the heavenly strings and a steady yet funky rhythm section, JayWood brings a ray of sunshine on the cloudiest of days.

On the track, JayWood shares: “‘Thank You’ is a song that’s dedicated to the folks that aren’t really in my life anymore, but more importantly it’s for my mom who passed away back in 2019.I feel like this song kinda wrote itself, it felt so easy to put together because I knew the core of what I was trying to get across. The demo for this song felt super strong but after Jake and I spent some time expanding a few ideas, the song really blossomed into something I couldn’t ever imagine.”
