There is never a day that goes by where I don’t think about this scene.
Great Men Academy is kind of in a weird spot when it comes to QL, because technically it’s a heterosexual series. HOWEVER. It is a very queer transgender allegory, and that is no more apparent than in this scene.
Love spends the entire series pining after the woman she used to be - the woman she still is no matter what her "body" might tell the world she is. Despite being so sure of her gender and who she is, Love struggles with her affections for Tangmo, because she fears that he loves her as a man (which she is not).
And yet, Tangmo loves her anyways. He loves her for her no matter if she’s a man or a woman. The only thing that matters is that well… Love is Love whomever that “Love” happens to be.
Love experiences gender dysphoria throughout the series, and despite the fact that she has the chance to “return to being a woman”, she decides that Tangmo’s life is far more important than the physical body of a cisgender woman. Great Men Academy understands that there are other options for Love to live authentically herself, and Tangmo will be right there with her.
