This has been a long time coming.  I know there were some who thought I just forgot about that story line or was just going to let what happened go, but this was planned from the get-go.  I redid the scene twice because the location didn’t work for me, but eventually it came out like I imagined.

Shehummed, half in agreement, half in thought. He sighed the same sighagain, the one where he was thinking too much and it was neitherpositive nor was it the deep black hole that dwelling on his familysucked him into. The sigh of bygone days and uncertain futures; thesigh of remembering Lyoko.

“What is it this time?” hervoice was soft, tender—things only he was familiar with. Thatthought comforted him as he shifted again so his lips rested wherehis nose had been. It took time as he quietly sorted his thoughts inorder, building and choosing words that carefully explained himself.A hard-earned skill that wasboth hammered as well as learned and not always implemented well.Fortunately Yumi was patient with him. That’s what he liked abouther.

“We didn’t have pulses onLyoko,” he started, “Not that we got a moment’s rest, but everynow and then, heart raced the same, we panted like we breathed,y’know…,”

“I do,” she affirmed, scratchinghis scalp soothingly.

“Just,” he flexed his fingersaround the small of her back, “How we could still feel things, eventhough…,”

Herpulse continued to beat against him. The thought of it not doing soseemed cold, but when he thought about Lyoko, the bold colors andsimple shapes of the landscape, the simplicity of what he had to do(not to hear Jeremie say it), that even though it interfered with thelife he had wanted to live—it still gave him a higher purpose for awhile. For the longest time, even in recent conversations with Yumi,he lamented that the secrecy of Lyoko took away any purpose hewould’ve had.

But right now, it all seemeddifferent. Right now, it wasremembering what it felt like to know what had to be done.

“It didn’t bother me, much,”Yumi said. He kissed her and agreed, then finished his thought.

“I don’t know what I’m doinganymore.”

“Hm,” Yumi responded. Thecurtness of the hum meant that what he had said stuck with her, butshe immediately disagreed with the sentiment. She repeated the hum,and shifted. Ulrich arched, allowing her space until her leg wasfolded beneath him before he eased himself to have her knee pushedinto his gut. She jabbed at him a little bit, smirk returning.

“Well, what are we doing rightnow? It’s 11A.M. in the morning.”

Ulrichblinked at her, stating the obvious. Nothing.That’s what they were doing.

“That’s pretty important rightnow, I think,” shestretched her arms over her head and Ulrich couldn’t help butchance a glance down at how she moved beneath her tank top beforegoing back to her face. She pretended not to notice, “We both go towork tomorrow, and the day after that, and whatever. I’ve got afight on Saturday. And—,”

“And ad nauseum,” Ulrichinterrupted, “Until...until what?”

Yumi’ssmirk fell and she stared into his eyes, serious.

“Well,” she said after a momentof silence to let her stare sink in, “We enjoy the moment.”

Ulrich sniffed. On the surface shewasn’t much that person—always one thing to the other, one placeto the other, and alwaysnose-to-the-grindstone determined at what she wanted to do. What shedidn’t want? Didn’t happen. But she was the one that tookhour-long baths without even a book to occupy her mind. She was theone that fell asleep first, leaving Ulrich to stare at the diffusedcity lights through their curtains.

“Okay,” he still accepted,“How?”

Yumi twisted her mouth, searchinghis features as she thought on how to answer in a way that would bestsuit him. In the meantime her other leg moved until it was alsofolded and jutting into his gut.

“My head’s a noisy mess,” hecontinued, “Y’know that though.”

Nodding, she sighed and he felt herpress into his gut more. Glancing down, then back up, he realignedhis hands on either side of her head and gently tested one foot inthe air. Through quietmurmuring in tones that didn’t hold the weight of their otherconversation, Ulrich bounced his feet on the bed to test her balanceand strength before finally lifting his legs in the air until hisbody slanted at an angle towards her face. His hands dug into themattress and he grunted as she held him in place.

“If someone saw us right nowthey’d think we’re nuts,” he said. Yumi laughed—short spurtsof breaths so as not to drop him.

“Or trapeze artists,”

“I had a fantasy to join thecircus once,”

“Oh?” Yumi raised an eyebrow,“Do tell,”

Ulrich laughed, self-aware but notembarrassed, “Or something like that. Just wanted to get out.”

Yumi tilted her chin to peck hislips before lowering him back down to entwine her long legs with his.

“Well, you’re out now,” shewhispered, gentle and knowing, “So what next?”

Quiet, he worked his jaw as asurefire sign that his instinct was the retort that thatwas the whole point he was trying to figure out,but he refrained until thetruth came out.

“I just wanna be here with youright now.”

Yumismiled and pulled him into a kiss.
