no for real!!!! baby mack was so sweet and obvious with his crushes, it was no wonder jayden and lane were famously extra gentle with him (i will share some bu stories eventually when i’m not busy as hell, but it was always a big deal that lane was so indulgent with mack when lane did have a few issues with other players on the team)
i do think it’s because people like to lean into this narrative of mack never liking anyone until will (which is fine by the way! rpf however you want), but the truth is that will is far from the first boy he’s ever loved, and mack has always been a fall hard and fast kind of romantic. you can see that with any team he plays on, but it’s especially clear whenever he goes to play for canada and instantly becomes everyone’s baby (not just this year either. mack was immediately adored and starry-eyed over his teammates at last year’s worlds and his world juniors team too)

The fascinating part of Jayden Perron is he’s just… gone. He was Mack’s boybestfriend with couple names and codependency and then Mack went to bu and seemingly never thought about him again. And that to moi is a very interesting chara note. And what does it mean for the will of it all, when Mack has had these close friendships before but this is the first time that he made a friend without knowing it was going to end with the season. He likes Will the best of all, and it’s so much more intense, so much more real, because he’s still going to be there next year and the year after and the year after. And Mack doesn’t quite know how to package up all the things that has made him feel for Will, the friend he loves best, the friend he might just get to keep.

cole eiserman, at ssm. jayden perron, in chicago. lane hutson, at bu. and where are they now? mack has always latched on to his One Guy in each locker room and then left them behind just as easily. and can you blame him? imagine moving from your childhood home to a different country at the tender, highly formative age of 12. never getting a chance to put down roots bc just two years later you boarded at shattucks for a season, then chicago for a year, then BU as a 17yo freshman who was never coming back for a second year once eligible for the show (despite what he promised eiserman lmao. poor eisy). imagine floating from team to team, roster to roster, always the new guy and the best guy and the youngest guy, too. of course mack learned how to fall fast and move on faster. how lonely, otherwise (even still?)
i do think he genuinely loved those boys, but so much of it was tied up in the hockey and the proximity of it all. and that's normal in hockey, where seasons end and trades happen and the guy you scored with one day is facing off across the dot from you the next; and esp for mack, raised to revere hockey as his god and moral compass and one true friend all in one. and then — enter will, who isn't going anywhere. will, who clutches his old friends with an iron grip and devoted dedication to keeping them in his life; who refuses to let them out of his circle. will, who switched positions to play on mack's line, for mack’s hockey, in possibly the deepest most romantic proclamation of loyalty ever to mack. will, who likes mack back just as much. will, who mack might finally, finally get to keep—!!!

Chicago Steel teammates receive mock trading cards of their friends and all agree there's one card in particular they want to keep for the future: the Cheetah "Chee" Macklin Celebrini's.
I've been wanting to talk about Perron for a long time, and this is perfect timing.
So, who is he and where has he been?
Former USHL Chicago Steel linemate of our very own Macklin Celebrini back in 2022-2023, that dynamic duo was dubbed "Puma" Perron & "Cheetah" Celebrini by Steel announcer Mark Citron.
Off the ice they were best friends who lived together with the same host family. On the ice, their chemistry was undeniable. The "Cat Connection" combined for 158 points that season and were incredibly fun to watch. Playing on Celebrini's right wing, Mack said he was a "special player" and they "saw the ice the same way". (Sound familiar?)
Perron was praised for his high hockey IQ, deceptive playmaking ability, elite puckhandling & passing skills and his speed on the ice. He wasn't a liability defensively either, with strong forechecking & passable backchecking. And he had a wicked wrist shot.
His consolidated ranking during his draft year (2023, same as Smith) was #20, but his ranking varied quite a bit depending on who you asked. Dobber Prospects had him as high #12, Elite at #29, NHL Central Scouting at #43 & Flo Hockey's Chris Peters at #52. Nearby everyone agreed he would go no later than mid-second round.
But he was picked at #94, in the bottom of the 3rd round, by Carolina.
Why? Because he was 5'9" and 166 lbs.
In a notoriously deep draft class, teams simply weren't willing to bet on an undersized player, no matter how skilled he was. Remember, this was the year that Zach fucking Benson slipped to #13 (and Buffalo basically ran to the podium to nab him).
After that disappointing draft, Perron went on to play for the University of North Dakota for 2 years where he did... okay. His freshman year, he had 18 points in 39 games, and his sophomore year he had 19 points in 31 games. He still looked pretty good, but he wasn't getting a ton of ice time as an underclassman.
But then he transferred to the University of Michigan, and everything started to click again. In his junior year, he had 41 points in 40 games, finally scoring over a point per game for the first time since Chicago. (Interesting to note, his assistant coach in Michigan was one of his coaches at the Steel.)
For his senior year, Perron is expected to stay in Michigan and continue honing his skills. The Hurricanes own his rights until August 2027, and I'd be kind of shocked if they didn't offer him an ELC before his rights expire. (If anyone can appreciate the value of a skilled undersized player, it's Carolina.)
But if they don't end up signing him, I'm nearly positive another team will. In an era of Zach Bensons and Lane Hutsons and Logan Stankovens, the NHL is finally starting to recognize that size isn't everything. The game is moving faster, and fans absolutely adore sneaky, slippery players who can dangle the puck, get out of danger & somehow manage to find the net.
Hell, if Carolina passes, I hope San Jose is smart enough to give him a chance. No matter what happens, this isn't the last we'll see of Puma Perron.

i am curious if jayden, samisa, gavin, and ryder are all staying in the celebrini family home with him (picturing cute little family dinners and robyn mother henning everyone and rj’s total fanboyism of all mack’s friends on display) or if they rented a place together. in my fic, i had mack rent a house for all his friends he had coming and going to stay in and hang out in throughout the summer, but i know that’s probably not how it’s actually going. either way though, i will be crying over these pics forever, thanks
