after Avid’s first death–Scott taking him down into the crypt, showing him the tunnels, keeping him safe in a room. Pyro and Owen trying to get Avid to come with them and Scott telling them to leave Avid because Avid is just level one and can’t do anything without putting himself in danger, pushing for them to leave him alone with urgency, to keep him safe, that he knows how to get out and basically saying he will when he wants to. when Scott feels a vampire has died, he immediately, quietly, questions if it’s Avid. he leaves in a hurry, searching through the crypt frantically for him and literally pausing to say that he was just beginning to like Avid. all the while, he’s speaking, trying to open up the possibility in his mind that it wasn’t Avid–it could’ve been Apo, even. he hasn’t seen Pyro or Owen, maybe it was them. he gets the news secondhand and just says “Huh.” vision narrowing, heart racing (which he mentioned earlier, to Avid, was just a memory of the feeling), ears ringing. he is actively dissociating as a stress response, but when he speaks, it’s that same composed dialogue again, albeit quite a bit hollower than how he usually delivers it. it’s him standing with the vampires as they make fun of Avid in his death. threatening Sausage when he gets too smug. leaves his discomfort with Pyro for another time, he can’t use up his composure too soon, can’t swing. and of course Scott phrases it in terms of moves and calculations because that’s what he knows best. when he’s with Shelby is when he allows himself to loosen some of that stiffness. says that no one’s ever loved him unconditionally like Avid did; not out of a fear for their safety, not out of a fear of being reprimanded, but truly just liking him. it takes Shelby saying that Avid was in love with him for it to sink in. Scott says he doesn’t think he was in love with Avid, but he sounds– confused. it’s like he genuinely didn’t understand what was going on until Shelby put words to it, like he hadn’t ever considered his own feelings in the matter. he doesn’t know what to do with himself. for once in possibly this man’s entire life, he is unsure of himself. he hasn’t felt love or anything close to it in centuries and doesn’t know what it feels like or what it’s supposed to feel like. the way he keeps hammering in Avid’s death – telling off Pyro, saying it wasn’t a good move to lower their numbers, first thing he asks Owen is if he knows about Avid, and when Owen says him and Pyro killed Avid, Scott seems distraught. he keeps looping back to this– constantly asking why? constantly bringing it back that it was the wrong thing to do. it’s so subtle and scattered but it’s perfect. the whole conversation between Scott and Owen back at the castle is so strained and Scott’s anger bleeds though it. Scott stands off to the side of Pyro and Sausage joking around, those two acting like nothing happened, and he says nothing until he starts to leave. then, of course, Scott turns around and goes, alone, to make a grave for Avid.
