The best part about this win -- besides it being the first time I’ve personally won this one -- is that Wakka was the only one on either team to score a goal. They could have won the whole time, they just needed the right motivation.

Seeing this makes me feel like I ought to stand up and sing “O Canada” despite not being Canadian. I’m so impressed that this has not three or even five, but a full seven articulated sections to the leaf. And not only that, but the sections diminish in size in very similar proportions to a real maple leaf. I love that kind of attention and commitment to detail.
In addition to trying out a new model, this was also the first time I had ever used biotope paper. I don’t often use fancy paper on new models, but this seemed like a really good opportunity to see if it lived up to its billing as “the missing link between kami and tant.” And it did! This is much higher quality paper than your standard kami, but it’s less thick than tant while maintaining that velvety texture. There were squash folds on this model that I think would have made regular kami give up the ghost. However, the biotope hung in there and didn’t rip, even when I had to try a couple times to get the fold right, so it definitely has good strength to it. I also really like they colors they offer for biotope. Instead of doing the standard unnaturally bright rainbow, the colors are more muted, earthy tones, which gives a lovely element of realism to models like this one. I definitely want to get more of this paper in the near future!

I was working on gathering material for origamiquotes and promptly forgot to update this tumblr. I am clearly a multitasking wunderkind. But while I’m on the subject, if you like incredibly intelligent and articulate people talking about the art, math, and science of origami, you would like origamiquotes. foldawayorigami came up with the idea, and he does a fantastic job curating quotes about many different subjects from diverse sources.
But anyway, have a duck! This is a really great example of the mesh between reality and geometry in origami. Would anyone mistake this for a real duck? No. But at the same time, it is unmistakably a duck. I love its jaunty little tail and beak.
