Making #Portraits4PositiveChange, and filming the testimonies of those who suffered human rights abuses, in the Gambia, under the former regime - image © @jasonflorio. In 2004, Mamadib was working as a journalist and printer for a Gambian newspaper, The Independent, which was often outspoken about President Yahya Jammeh’s rule, and his human rights abuses. . On 16th april 2004 - masked men came to the Eagle Press, where he was working at the time, in the early hours of the morning, armed with pistols. Mamadib and 5 of his colleagues from the newspaper were told to lie on the ground with their hands behind their backs. One of the masked men then fire bombed the print machine but the fire caught him, too - in the ensuing panic, the other masked men attempted to dampen the fire on their colleague. As this happened,, there was a power cut. Mamadib and his colleagues saw this as an opportunity to escape into the darkness. “It was so dark, we could not see the door...thanks god, he saved us”. They hid until they saw the masked men drive off in a black car, with blacked out windows, and no license plate (a mode of transport often used by Jammeh’s henchmen). .
