AITA for trying to re-kidnap my childhood best friend? So when I (40F) was a kid I was friends with this guy (then 10M, now 40M) who we'll call J. J lived at my parents' workplace, which I didn't question at the time, but I've since found out that he was there because he had been kidnapped. I'm not gonna get into it too much, but long story short, apparently he's a genius and my father's organization mined information from experiments he took part in. We were best friends in our preteens until I went away to school. Fastforward something like 25 years, and J escaped. Normally I wouldn't give a fuck, good for him I guess, but my father assigned ME to catch him and bring him back. Please keep in mind, it's my job and the people I answer to have made it clear that this is non-negotiable. I thought this would take me maybe a weekend, but unfortunately J is pretty damn good at staying out. It's been a couple years and I'm no closer than I was when I started. Meanwhile, he's been impersonating regulated professions all along the way, and has endangered dozens of people. Not great people, but unfortunately the law protects assholes too, I don't make the rules. It'd almost be funny if he weren't also yanking my chain constantly. Some of the shit he gets up to is seriously invasive, like once he broke into my house while I was asleep and stole my gun from under my pillow; once he wrote a romance novel with a obvious expy of myself as the heroine; and once, he secretly set me up with this great guy (who has since died) and on the anniversary of his death, J threw it in my face that he'd been the one to set us up. He's always sending me these uncomfortably personal gifts, like my dead mom's watch, and calling me on the phone to taunt me. Possibly the most annoying parts is the clues he leaves: once, he sent me a plaster of paris model of a head and treated me to a plaster-of-paris demonstration of my hypothetical execution by guillotine. All the clues are in that vein, it's so obnoxious. I know he doesn't have much reason to be rooting for me, since he doesn't want to be locked in a basement again. Fair enough. But I feel like, since he knows full well that I am pursuing him out of professional duty and not personal grudge (most days), he doesn't need to go so damn far out of his way to ruin my day. AITA?

Side note: GOD I FORGOT HOW MUCH I LOVE WRITING JAROD. I haven't written a Jarod fanfic in two years… but fuck I might just write one. Ugh I love my poor damaged old man.
