James H. “Jimmy” Doolittle—The Racer’s Edge
A native Californian, Doolittle began his flying career as a test pilot for the Army in World War 1. Following the war, he became a top racing flyer, winning several competitions and becoming the first person to fly across the United States in less than a day. After receiving his doctorate in aeronautics from M.I.T., he pioneered the technique of “blind flying”, in which a pilot flies using instrumentation only. He returned to active military duty in World War 2 as a lieutenant colonel, leading a daring air raid on Japan in 1942.
