Yeah, I'm writing (for a given value of "writing") a CR1 fic, so I told myself I could only start Campaign 2 when the fic was done, to prevent distractions... which worked about as well as you'd expect. Self-denial is a poor motivator.

And actually "he would never believe me now!" is actually character conflict material for the non-hanahaki person, too, that would be fun to resolve. I think perhaps that the trope works better with unexpressed love than it does with actually, really unrequited love, because I don't believe in falling in love because someone else loves you either, nor is "the person is literally dying because of you" the ideal situation for that. Anyway.

Good points! And good food for thought along with @acitymadeofsong ‘s observation that these kinds of fics do kind of work better as small things/drabbles.

I definitely think the properly unrequited love thing turning into actual love is the real believability-killer; it’s gotta be unexpressed love.

4. How would they describe each other to loved ones who haven’t met their partner yet?

Ho boy this one made me have to think outside of the box! The trick being most of the characters know each other already.

I actually sat on this ask for a few days because I initially was going to respond to it with a mini fic based on a hc where Avon meets someone close to Vila but then, as well as that not QUITE being the prompt, I found out that the character’s name we picked was actually in a fic I was recced so I’m glad I didn’t because I’d look like such a rip off monster ahahha. 

(I do enjoy how Avon introduces Vila in Powerplay. Avon, you’re such a bitch.)

Avon:

“You want to know what Vila is like? And you’ve not sustained a blow to the head? Well, you might wish you had after you meet him. He’s a Delta, around my height, less hair than sense, if you can believe it. What does he do? Oh, not much usually. He can pick locks and crack safes though, remarkably well. We do keep him around for something besides emptying bottles.“

I think however Avon speaks, even to loved ones, he’d probably have a hard time being directly complimentary. He’s built up a walls for everyone, regardless of how close they are, and he’s not just going to lower them and get all mushy when speaking about Vila (even if he is definitely crazy about him). 

Vila:

“Anyone special? Uh, actually, there’s this guy... Avon. Maybe you’ve heard of him? He’s a really good- yeah yeah! Kerr Avon! Yes, really! He’s such a wonderful technician and- wha- yes, but- that was ONE time. He’s changed now. Kind of... well, we won a bit in Freedom City so he doesn’t need to do that kind of thing anymore. Of course he’s not just after me for my money!“

It’s hard to describe your boyfriend when he’s a well-known criminal and the Federation’s #2 wanted man (forget Bayban). Vila would be conservative when speaking about Avon, but honestly - get a few drinks into him and he will GUSH about him.
