hi! i hope this isn't too strange of a thing to ask but i was thinking about starting a homestuck rp blog. could you give me any recommendations/tips ?
Itâs only strange because youâre asking me about two years after I stopped being popular. Iâll do my best, though!
First things first: Do your research. Go through the comic and read all the pesterlogs theyâve participated in, study all the scenes that focus on them, watch all the flashes they play a role in. Fan interpretations tend to leave out important details that make the characters compelling, and you want to make sure youâre starting out on the right foot. Is Karkat just loud and angry, or is he projecting outward to mask his many insecurities? Is Equius just a pervert, or is he deeply disturbed by his compulsions and tries to force others to see them as something they should respect?Next: when creating your blog, make it clear who your character is and what their situation is like. Whether youâre playing a canon character or an AU version, people need to know who they are and what theyâre about. You can do this just by saying [indie dave strider RP blog, canon timeline] but Iâve never preferred that. Have a simple blurb on your front page that gives your characterâs name and something that explains them, and a detailed about page that people can look at after.Also, make sure you only have a few links on your front page, and that they lead to clear/concise pages. If you ask me, thereâs no need for much of anything past About (to explain your character), Out Of Character (to explain who you are), and Relationships (which you wonât be able to fill out for a little while).
After that: Follow lots of people, and start roleplaying as soon as possible. Have your character talk to others as often as you can, and donât be afraid of someone not wanting to RP with you. Weâre all here for the same thing. When you might like a post, instead have your character respond, or send an ask. Youâll get lots of followers real fast if you do that. Make greeting posts that are more than just âhello;â think of some problem your character needs to solve or some question they can pose to new followers.Make sure the ratio of roleplay to OOC posts on your blog is high in the formerâs favor. If you reblog an ask meme, wait a while before reblogging another. Youâre more likely to get asks if you send some beforehand. Read everyoneâs OOC and About pages, and take note of whatever rules they might have (most everyone uses the same basic set). Some people only like to have their characters talk over the internet while some are down for whatever. Generally, Homestuck RP doesnât have intricate plotting and long storylines, and itâs pretty fast-paced. Not to say that you canât do that if you want, but be prepared to be the driving force for any long plots you want to do.And thatâs about it, I guess.
