praise all the girls inside of me: the ones not worth saving, the ones who thought she’d never make it this far.
I will carry their weight inside of me; not like ghosts, but like songs.
— Jade Mitchell, from “Affirmation,” published in Inside the Bell Jar
Many dancers choose Wayne McGregor’s solos this year at Prix de Lausanne, so here’s my favourites from semifinals of senior cathegory.
Jade Mitchell, Beatriz Kuperus and Laureen Laar.
Jade positively ROCKED her Chroma. I loved her immensely, such charisma, such intensity, every movement so deeply felt, so meaningful. No words...
Plus Achille de Groeve in Becomings. There was something about the way he moved, about the way he felt every tiny bit of his body.
Lit: Aftermath
the worst thing about this is that
this will not be the thing that hurts the most.
you will never forget the first time absence makes a home of you;
not by what it brings but what it leaves behind.
& like any animal, I am learning to be brave, to swallow down this shame, to speak of your name
& refuse to let it stay.

I will sing this survival until it is no longer a haunting.
I will sing this survival, until it is not survival anymore.
— Jade Mitchell, from “Affirmation,” published in Inside the Bell Jar
Lit: The Aftermath of the End of the World
between the bed & the bathroom wall, the tidal wave collapses. you are miles away, in a town whose heart you’ve swallowed whole because you wanted it to love you so badly. you look up, watch it leak in from the ceiling, feel this saltwater suffering suffocate & I will hand you my eyes in terror.
I never wanted it to be like this, baby: the world is a black sea now, the sharks are infesting its seams & they are telling me to leave. & I know it engulfs you too. that recovery is another storm we try to survive through, and there are days where we are just ships, broken, beaten at the bottom of the sea, scarred ourselves in our journeys that we never saw coming.
but know that even storms have their silver linings, & we are survivors, shipwrecked. still learning how to swallow the salt to stop it sticking to our marrow.
and the water doesn’t have to be an ocean to overcome. remember: we are just bodies in the bathtub. it’s as simple as pulling the plug.
sometimes, all you need is the people that you love & a little bit of courage to build a life raft big enough to stay afloat on.

“But why him? After everything you saw me go through, why him?” “I don't know.”
