For the characters of Blake and Mortimer, Edgar P. Jacobs took inspiration from the appearence and personality of two of his best friends and collaborators - Jacques Laudy (Blake) and Jacques van Melkebeke (Mortimer). Both Laudy and van Melkebeke were painters, as well as comic artists. They worked together with Jacobs and Hergé for the magazine 'Tintin'.
