highlight of the rookie game for me tonight was the one guy on the Rangers throwing down the gloves and trying to get Jack Nesbitt to fight, and Nesbitt just being like. Bro what
Description: Your relationship with Matt had been nothing short of perfect so far and youâd love every minute. Your work-life routines had fallen into place and made life easy for the two of you. Until an unfamiliar face threatens you after work and you turn to Matt for comfort and answers.
Warning(s): threatening language, threat of violence, protective!Matt, mild language (??), brief descriptions of panic/fear, Patterson being an Ass

You were ten minutes from finishing a gruelling shift at the hospital. Make no mistake, you loved your job, but there were days where all you wanted to do was hide in the on-call room and pretend you were anywhere else. Thankfully, you would be going home to a hot shower and a handful of episodes of New Girl to catch up on before youâd go and visit Matt at the Firehouse.
âY/N, thereâs someone asking for you in the waiting room,â April informed you as you tried to sneak off to pack up your things.
âDamnit, I was so close to making a clean break,â you half-joked and made your way through to the waiting room. As soon as you entered the fairly empty space, an unsettled feeling grew in the pit of your stomach. A stranger was standing near one of the vending machines, in a black trenchcoat with what you guessed to be a nice suit beneath.
âDoctor Y/L/N, right?â
âYes, can I help you?â
âIâm Jack Nesbitt. Youâre Lieutenant Caseyâs fiance⊠Prettier than I expected,â he mused and you swallowed hard. Anxiety crept up your throat and made your mouth dry.
âI finish soon, I should really get my things -â
âYou tell Casey that I need the book. And unless he brings it to me⊠There are going to be some serious consequences,â he stated quietly and took a step closer to you. Instinctively, you took a step back.
âI have no idea what youâre -â
âJust tell him. Heâll know what it means and Iâd hate to hurt that pretty face of yours, Doc.â He turned on his heel and sauntered off. Fear gripped you tighter by the second and you hurried back inside to the on-call room to gather your belongings. As you rushed out of the hospital, you ignored the concerned stares and the questions that never reached your ears.
The Firehouse was the only place you could think of that would make you feel safe after that chilling encounter. It seemed to be a million miles away by the time you actually rolled to a stop outside of your husband-to-beâs workplace.
"Hey, Y/L/N -" Kelly greeted you as you hurried into the apparatus floor. Tears stung in your eyes as you mustered the strength to speak.
"Where's Matt?"
"Oh, he's in his office. Is everything alright?" You shook your head and began to make your way to the internal doors when the man you assumed to be Patterson stopped you. Matt had told you about the injustice that had been making its way through the CFD as of late and you couldnât help but get a little angry.
"He's my fiance and I need to see him," you stated tearfully and he shook his head.
âIâm afraid I really canât let you in unless you have an approved appointment,â he reiterated and Kelly moved to back you up. He put a hand on your shoulder and squeezed in reassurance.
"She needs to talk to Casey. Let her in."
âSeveride, per CFD regulations -â
âPatterson, let her in. She needs to talk to Casey,â Kelly pushed. Reluctant, Patterson stepped aside and Kelly walked you up to Mattâs office.
"I'm here to talk if you need it," he assured you and pressed a kiss to the top of your head before he made his way back downstairs. You were well acquainted with the Firehouse at this point and didnât even knock on Mattâs door, just gently pushed it open. The sight of him in his chair, hunched over some paperwork made your lips twitch into an almost-smile through the tears that remained.
âWho is it?â
âMatt.â His name came out in a strained whisper, the lump in your throat not allowing you to speak any louder than that. He immediately looked up and was concerned for the way you stood in the doorway, teary-eyed and uncharacteristically quiet.
âY/N, whatâs going on? Whatâs the matter?â He was on his feet and over to you in an instant. Pulled you in for a warm hug and held you as tight as he could physically manage. That was when you let yourself cry.
âHey, hey - Talk to me,â he soothed and ran a hand over your back. Up and down in calming strokes. You sobbed harder before taking a step back and pulling in a deep breath.
âSome - some guy, came into the hospital⊠Said something about you giving him a book? I donât know what he was talking about but he knew me by name -â
âDid he tell you his name?â
âUh⊠Jack! Jack Nesbitt. He wants this book and thinks that you have it or know where it is. Matt, I donât know what youâve gotten yourself into but I donât want any part of it,â you explained and he shook his head. Pulled you in for another hug and cradled the back of your head.
âY/N, sweetheart, I promise everythingâs gonna be fine and nothing is going to happen to you. Nothing,â he stated firmly and pressed a kiss to your temple. The two of you stood like that for a few minutes longer, with Matt whispering reassurances and sweet nothings into your ear, all the while running a hand up and down your back.
âHe knew my name, Matt. Where I work. He knew that weâre engaged - whatâs going on?â
âI promise - promise, Iâll give you all the answers you want. But you have to trust me that I canât do that right now,â Matt explained calmly and though you wanted to be mad - you had good reason to be - the fact that you trusted him meant that you couldnât find it in you to be angry.
âI love you and Iâm gonna do everything I can to make sure youâre safe, alright?â You nodded and rested your head against his chest.
âI trust you,â you stated because you felt the need to assure him that you werenât angry, just scared.
âWhy donât you go home, order take out and Iâll stop by in a few hour to check in. And I wonât stop checking in until the shift is over and I can come home.â Mattâs suggestion seemed appealing so you nodded in agreement and took a step back. A tender kiss was shared between the two of you before you turned and headed out of the door.
