Yeah I'm not gonna get this done anytime soon, might as well post it.
The show doesn't give us any ages for the mummies, but there are moments it's implied Rath is older, so I've put him at nine years older than Ja-kal in my fic. While aware of each other, they don't really start to interact until after the battle against Apep.
Here Rath, newly risen to Master rank despite his young age, gives some advice to an adolescent Ja-kal.

An old WIP of my OC Emerald with Ja-Kal from Mummies Alive. Got the inspiration to draw this after reading a dusty-ass Mummies Alive roleplay I did with a friend many years ago. May decided to finish one day.

Ja-Kal with an s/o that is a single mother and the reincarnation of his wife Tia and her son is the reincarnation of his son Padjet?
The first Mummies Alive! request and it's for Ja-Kal to feel pain. Ya'll are merciless. I love it.
Single mom! s/o is reincarnation (Mummies Alive!)
She is hardworking, kind, a strong mother and her son is equally lovely. Despite barely knowing them, s/o does all she can to contribute to their cause, checking in on and them and providing a second place to escape the confines of the temple when they need space. All that while being a mother and a worker and doing so much. If somehow that hadn't made Ja-Kal fall in love, he's certain his fate was sealed the first time her little one fell asleep in his arm and she gazed at them with all the awe would give the stars.
Ja-Kal isn't foolish. The fact s/o is a mother and bears such a striking resemblance to his beloved Tia, or that her toddler holds Ja-Kal's fingers the same way Pajet once had, is not lost on him. They are similar, familiar to what he once knew but lost and in a way, the similarities comfort him. S/o is a lovely woman, but admittedly a part of the attraction does come from the fact that Ja-Kal so dearly misses what he once had. With her, it is not the same, but it is close enough.
Not that he would ever admit to having feelings for her. S/i is strong, impressive. Alive with energy and dreams that she works so hard towards. A love shared between life and death is doomed to falter, trapped within the natural cycle of things that deems it too unnatural to truly work. Besides, how could Ja-Kal ever fall for another with the pain of Tia and Padjet still so close?
There are moments though. Strange ones. He can't quite put it into words but they are there and so perplexing. Details that shouldn't exist and yet they thrive. Lullabies s/o sings to her son have different words but the melodies are the same as the ones he thought he'd never hear again. Coincidence, maybe. The bedtime stories her son tries to play out with him and the rest of the mummies, they are not stories. They are memories that Ja-Kal and Tia shared, the moments where they proved themselves or fought off those who would seek to hurt the Pharaoh. Memories only one who was there would know of.
Ja-Kal dares not get his hopes up but temptation has never felt so bitterly sweet.
To think that it is Scarab who reveals the truth. Spells tied to the mind are not unheard of, especially given his many attempts to retake what he believes to be his, but Scarab is truly misguided in attempting to have the mummies see those around them as they truly are. More accurately, who they once were. The mummies nearly lose themselves, seeing past foes in innocent bystanders. Only Presley, to them the Prince Rapses, is able to uncover the truth and explain to them the maddening scene. Desperate for a place to think so far from the temple they go to the nearest safe house they can think of - s/o's. Praying they do not see her as a reincarnated foe or monster.
Air has long since left Ja-Kal's lungs but he feels it punched out of him all the same.
Tia opens the door to greet him. A toddler Padjet in her arms. And it's all it takes in him that keeps him from embracing the both of them.
The mummies rally, defeat Scarab, things fall back to normal. yet they are not quite normal. She's no longer a reminder of Tia, she is Tia - different but her. He's no longer a wandering thought of what Padjet might have looked like as a toddler, he is Padjet at an age he was not there to witness himself. Ja-Kal already was head-over-heels for her and her family but now these feelings were intensified by the feelings from before. Muddled feelings twisting and folding onto themselves are confusing but this takes things further than he knew they could be.
He retreats inwardly. He needs time to think. Time to reflect. Tia and Padjet are far behind in the past, untouchable and unreachable. The ones before him were like them, but different. Does he stay loyal to the ones lost, never forgiving himself or moving on? Does he move on, and risk treating them as if they were Tia and Padjet when they are not quite them in the same sense?
The mummies are going to have to go to s/o on this one to get this moping leader of theirs to stop overthinking things. Ja-Kal is too paralyzed by hesitation to make a move. It's on her to set things in motion.
The Mummies have AWFUL fashion sense.
