J-Dilla - The King’s Return
# 2,624
Slum Village “Raise It Up” Wordplay label promotional 12″ (2000)
2000 sounds about right when I first found Slum Village and J-Dilla. WUSB’s The Basement may have played it during one summer when it first came out. That was when I had fall-outs with a former friend / co-worker manager and a girl from New Jersey I was to meet who cancelled at the last minute, so I had nothing but non-commercial radio to keep me company. J-Dilla unknowingly sampled Thomas Bangalter’s “Extra Dry” (1998), thinking the producer was too obscure to care. Daft Punk later found out of “Raise It Up” and instead of extracting royalties, asked Slum Village to remixed the electronic duo’s “Aerodynamic” (2001)
The Wordplay label made a nice promotional vinyl copy as they tag their own cover.
