The Personal Meaning of Grape Leaves!
When people describe their childhood, they often begin with where they were raised, what sports they played and maybe talk about their friends growing up. However when I am asked that question, it is difficult for me to find a spot to begin. As I moved countries a couple of times throughout my childhood, I was never able to establish a sport I was particularly fond of or garner meaningful enough friendships to share; and of course talking about where I am from may prolong the conversation beyond desire. Rather, when someone asks me about my childhood I discuss the aspects of my Egyptian culture that matter to me. One of the most important aspects has to be food and my favorite Egyptian dish is Stuffed Grape Leaves. I mean to put simply, this staple of Egyptian cuisine has surrounded me throughout almost every aspect of life. They would often get packed as a part of my school lunch. As a second grader I was embarrassed; the people around me were eating breaded chicken fingers dipped in ketchup while I was choosing to eat stuffed grape leaves dipped in a Yogurt Sauce?
It was almost hard to eat them from the influx of questions I'd receive before each bite. I would often ask my mother to take me to a friend's house, to which she would respond, βI can't, I am stuffing grape leaves for tonight.β By the way, that was a legitimate response I had received and is not an exaggeration. I would even go to my Grandmotherβs home where my mother and her would have religious, long-drawn out arguments on where the best place to buy Grape Leaves is around town. Ultimately the buzz surrounding this household food led me to look at things in a broader perspective. What main ways do Stuffed Grape leaves play a role in Egyptian culture and family tradition and how does the significance of this dish in this culture compare to other cultures?
