Ok, so these are my headcanons for Dovey and Lesso in general, not just in wtawtaw (though obviously they are also used plentifully in wtawtaw).

Clarissa Dovey:

I think Dovey has two driving forces. First, she wants to do good. I think that she truly believes in each and every one of her students (and before that the heroes she was fairy godmother to) and does her upmost to help them succeed. We see this in the movie many times, especially when she encourages Agatha to embrace her inner beauty.

In my mind, she is also a perfectionist. What is more, she is a successful perfectionist that has never really had to face failure. We can see this just in her movie CV where she is the most sought after fairy godmother in the land and Dean of the School for Good. These are big accomplishments.

I headcanon Dovey as an oldest daughter from an influential family. She was held to high standards her entire life and, since she kept meeting those standards, she got more and more afraid to not meet them. As such, she is heavily influenced by what society expects of her and has terrible anxiety. Probably the only real choice she made was to become a fairy godmother instead of a princess, and then deciding to do that made her even more perfectionistic because she had to prove to everyone that she made the correct decision.

What's really interesting is when these two motivations come into conflict with each other (or with what she wants for herself). The Evers proclaim that they want to improve the lives of others and help people, but there is evidence that this is hypocritical: turning students into creatures if they fail, their best students being bullies, how they treat Nevers, etc. Sometimes, what is good and just does not align with what is correct by Ever social customs and that is a huge source of internal conflict for Dovey.

Leonora Lesso:

I think that Lesso was predominantly driven by rage when she was younger and still is, though to a lesser extent. She is angry about the way the world is set up and that she had to struggle just to survive. She wanted to prove to everyone that it doesn't matter that they were all out to get her, she still succeeded. There is a certain amount of spite too. She is determined to make all the people that didn't believe in her suffer and prove to them that they were wrong. You can see this in the library scene when she insists coming close to winning isn't good enough.

What is more, it was always easy for her to blame all her problems on the Evers. From her perspective, their lives were full of comfort and they were benefiting from the suffering of the Nevers around her. I think that she became the Dean of Evil so that she could even the playing field and give the Evers a taste of their own medicine. This is best shown in the scene where Dovey confronts her about Rafal and she says she just wanted evil to finally win. She wants the Evers to know what it feels like to suffer for no reason.

So it was pretty inconvenient when she fell in love with an Ever.

Granted, she would probably deny she was in love with Dovey but she totally is. And she hates herself for it. She knows how it happened and is fully aware of how stupid and needy it seems; Dovey was unwaveringly kind to her when nobody (besides August Sader) ever had been and, in turn, Lesso became completely loyal to Dovey. So she has a second motivation, which is to not let anyone hurt Dovey or force her to do something she doesn't want her to do. And, more selfishly, to not let anyone take Dovey away from her.
