How long after the prologue scene do you think Nancy and Jonathan find their way back to each other? And how exactly do you envision them finding each other again given the career paths they’ve chosen?
I’m not sure how long it would take. I’m partial to them never having been good at being broken up and maintaining at least some form of a fwb situation through out their entire break up. I can see how some people read the epilogue as Jonathan actually already knowing about Emerson and playing along for the others who are clearly more shocked than him…
All this to say, I think they’re consistently in each other’s lives post break up until they get back together. And I think that would take some time. I think Nancy would move to New York (Jonathan is quoted in the epilogue saying “I think you guys would really like New York” which I take as him wanting Nancy to move there) for a newspaper job seeing as her job at the Herald is basically a paid internship training program, aka temporary and entry level, which she could leverage into a bigger job in NYC. Once she moves, they continue their weird (affectionate) pseudo relationship but grow even closer. I’m not sure how sustainable that is but eventually something has to give and they have another emotionally raw conversation where they admit they miss each other and it’s not shared trauma that keeps them in love with one another, their love is their own and they happened to go through some tough shit together as teens.
And then they get married in the late 90s and dance to truly madly deeply.
Obviously.
