Lorelai' freak out over the independence inn being sold off is so Autistic coded from my pov. and here's why (a little personal but)
I RELATE so hard to this story, cause I am currently going through a similar reality to Lorelai's(I'm Autistic too...in case didn't get that part :L). Losing your childhood home, or home home, is harder to comprehend. In a world of horrific somethings and never really or likely being able to have a my own home, this family house of mine has been so constant, and safe, which more than ever feels important.
The idea that it could disappear and be put in the hands of others, who don't understand the significance of what this house means to me/those close to me, feels beyond devastating. Yes it's just a house/building like the Inn is to Lorelai. But there's the thing, in a very uncertain, changing world, these buildings were constantly there to us(Lorelai and I) even if far away. The older you get, the more change is inflicted upon you and YOU TRY AND TRY to deal...but something always causes thing to snap.../Autistic meltdown.
Now bringing it back to the show.
THAT is the INN for Lorelai (hence the devastation in season 3 is more horrific).
She was losing her home, her stability and couldn't express it properly (AGAIN SO RELATE). Also previous episodes she saw Rory moving away to another life, she realized marriage with Max not for her, but it was the INN(even though she wanted to leave to do her own with Sookie) was the straw that broke the camel's back. IT WAS TOO MUCH CHANGE, but Lorelai doesn't realize that initially. It takes her sometime(again Autistic spectrum like myself takes ages to absorb what is really upsetting) realize what was hurting her...hence taking it out the wrong way, either way on Sookie, and then her mother.
It takes her a while too to realize the core and why she's really upset too...and while again Lorelai is seen as the quirky character in the noughties and adorable for TV...but in reality...it is not ever that fun (AGAIN I WOULD KNOW). Hence her act of being fun constantly...but when the stability goes...or people threaten her safety world that she has built within the inn, Stars Hollow and Rory...well meltdown...and I don't know, I AM JUST RAMBLING but I think about it a lot. But also I do love how Luke sees that and is the calming presence for her in that regards too, when things collapse inwards.
I know a lot of people don't recognize that in Lorelai and just see the Autistic coded character in Paris. BTW Paris is absolutely Autistic too...but she's Autistic in way that is relatable but also MORE SHE is almost completely, unmasked and used a comic prop for it...(she is punished for it socially and for most part, doesn't deserve it). Until later seasons IMHO. I ADORE PARIS though and ride at down for her and BELIEVE RORY does not appreciate her enough.
But as an adult Autistic I relate to Lorelai in her 30s putting on a constant act of cheeriness, and being seemingly immature over certain things like relationships, food and life. To me she is an Autistic woman/spectrum...who has completely masked/knows entertaining is safest way to be...and I don't know in her meltdowns and fears I just GET IT. I REALLY DO., I always feel the need to come to defence of female characters like Lorelai...not to say anyway of her okay re mistakes/poor decisions are all good because I see her as someone on the spectrum, but RATHER I UNDERSTAND HER, and if you are an Autistic woman who masks extremely well. It feels lonely and people don't understand at all. So women like Lorelai on screen mean everything to me a late diagnosed Autistic adult, and until I got my diagnosis three years, I guess, I finally get why I and so many deemed not societal norm women gravitate towards her and many other female characters like her.
Holder of the brave but proud stance that there’s not a single season of Heisei Rider (especially just on the basis it’s a Heisei season) that’s inherently/objectively anymore better then any Showa season- and I don’t just mean the semi popular shows, I mean the ones literally nobody watches but me (And that as well, there are some Showa seasons infinitely better than some Heisei ones)
