Bone Marrow Donor Drive at FailCon
In the past month, two awesome designers, one named Amit, one named Carin were diagnosed with Leukemia. I know them both and I want to help. So here's the plan.
From noon-6pm on Monday Oct 24th, FailCon will be hosting a bone marrow donor drive. The awesome folks at bethematch.org are going to be there to swab the insides of our cheeks and take down some medical information. In 10 minutes, you'll be part of the National Registry.
When someone in need of a bone marrow transplant like Amit or Carin and you're bone marrow is a match, then bethematch.org will contact you and set up a time for you to donate. Donating is quick and doesn't involve surgery. You can read more about that here.
And if you can't make FailCon this year, but still want to sign up or the National Marrow Registry, you can get a swab kit sent to your home - I've done it before - it's easy.
Our goal is to get 100 people registered to help find Amit and Carin donors!
I posted about this before, but it took me a few days to actually go sign up on Marrow.org for my kit. There's no reason to wait, so I figured I'd give anybody else procrastinating another poke. It ain't just for the South Asians, 1/5 white folk don't find matches either.
Getting Swabbing Kit Took 5 Minutes
In 5 minutes I was able to complete Marrow.org's registry process and have a kit sent to me for free. When I get it, I'll swab, send back and then I will have #swabbedforAmit.
