First Day of School Tuesday, September 3
The First Day of School begins at ISLAND OAK HIGH SCHOOL at 7:50 am. After Assembly and introductions, students and faculty will proceed together to Sunrise Waldorf School for the 9:00 am Rose Ceremony via carpool (if you are able to help carpool, please let us know via return Email). This year for the first year, the Rose Ceremony will recognize and reflect Waldorf education’s full 12-year (plus ECE) curriculum design. Grade 12 students will welcome Grade 1 students into the Waldorf grade school. Due to limited space, seats are reserved only for Faculty and students. After the ceremony, we will be carpooling back to Island Oak High School to prepare for our cycling/camping trip to Cowichan Lake. Also on the first day of school, we will be checking bicycles and gear to ensure they are in good condition for the bicycle trip on the following day. Therefore, on the first day of school, please bring: A packed lunch and snack as usual Bicycle Bike Helmet Sleeping Bag Sleeping Pad Tent (if you have one) You may bring your packed clothing as well, or just bring your packed clothing the next day, September 4th, when we depart on our cycling trip (see attached packing list). However it is important you bring your bike, helmet, sleeping bag, pad and tent the first day. School is dismissed at 3:00 pm.

Transitioning from Grade 8 at Sunrise Waldorf School?
If you are a student transitioning to grade 9 from Sunrise Waldorf School, you do not need to fill out an application form. Instead, please complete a HIGH SCHOOL TRANSITION FORM (ask for one at SWS office or download High School Transition Form right here). We are eager to get to know you and the Transition Form is the first step...it asks what kind of learning works for you, how you hope to contribute to our learning community, and it asks you to reflect on your learning experiences so far. We want to hear from you in your own words. Turn the Transition Form in at SWS office or bring it to us at IOHS. After we receive the form, we'll call you and your parents/guardians in for an interview.
International Youth Initiative Program in Sweden
Island Oak alumni Georgia Clap visited Friday, Feb. 17th to do a presentation on her experience with the Youth Initiative Program (YIP), an anthroposophical post-secondary program outside Jarna, Sweden. The ten-month youth initiative leadership training and social entrepreneurship training equips 19-25 year-olds with the tools to realize their ideas for manifesting change in the world. Living on a large farm located on a fjord, the students enjoy a packed schedule of lectures, community engagement, group projects and internships. They also form a question as the basis for an individual project. Courses in fundraising, budgeting, book keeping, community mapping, water, systems thinking, portraiture, sustainable economics and business, project planning and more help students recognize “tools of abundance” and realize that they have everything they need to manifest their ideas. The program teaches students how to “challenge social norms and economic restrictions”. During the program, a dance group Clap and her friends began for fun evolved into a performance group that toured Europe for months after the program ended.
