Cast on a multiple of 2 stitches

Row 1: Knit Row 2: *k1, p1; repeat from * until end Row 3: *k1b, k1; repeat from * until end Row 4: *p1, k1; repeat from * until end Row 5: *k1, k1b; repeat from * until end

Repeat rows 2 to 5 until desired length.

Note: You may want to not start or end a row with a k1b, depending on the edge you want. I recommend either replacing any first or last k1b by a k1, or maybe doing a garter stitch border.

CHECKERS

Cast on multiple of 10 stitches plus 8 stitches

Row 1: k8, *p2, k8; repeat from * until end Row 2: p8, *k2, p8; repeat from * until end

Repeat rows 1 & 2 five more times, for a total of 12 rows

Row 13: Purl Row 14: Knit

Repeat rows until desired length. It is recommended to bind off after the 12th row.

DIAGONAL WIDE RIB

Cast On: Multiple of 20

Row 1: *K10, P10 repeat from * until end

Row 2: *K9, P10, K1 repeat from * until end

Row 3: *P2, K10, P8 repeat from * until end

Row 4: *K7, P10, K3 repeat from * until end

Row 5: *P4, K10, P6 repeat from * until end

Row 6: *K5, P10, K5 repeat from * until end

Row 7: *P6, K10, P4 repeat from * until end

Row 8: *K3, P10, K7 repeat from * until end

Row 9: *P8, K10, P2 repeat from * until end

It’s a really simple pattern, even though it’s long. It’s easy to catch on.

Row 2 (WS): K1 *P3, K2 repeat from * until last 4 stitches, P3, K1

Repeat these two rows until desired length.

This one was devised by my grandmother just after she taught me to bind off for the first time, and that was so many years ago. Documenting these squares brings back so many memories!
