Ms. Codex 167 - [Court record of proceedings in a lawsuit against Isabel Garcia]

This lavish manuscript is a court record of some proceedings in a lawsuit instituted 8 July 1549, by royal authorities of Villa de la Cumbre (Prov. of Extremadura) against Isabel Garcia, widow of Juan de la Amarilla, and her sons. They were charged with evasion of royal and municipal taxes by claiming nobility to which they were not entitled. They received a condemnatory verdict on 16 July 1550. Isabel's descendants reopened the case on 14 December 1585, presenting witnesses to attest to their noble ancestry and purity of blood. A lengthy part of the manuscript is given over to the depositions of these witnesses. The case was closed by the Audiencia of Granada ordering restitution of all property that might have been confiscated, 27 June 1590. It was compiled in Spain in 1590 CE.

—BACKSTORY

Isabel, Isa for short, had been born into a loud and bright family in SoCal. They had never had much, but Isa had never thought much of it. What they didn’t have in wealth, they had always found a way to make up for in love. Every day after school, her abuela would be cooking homemade food from pollo guisado to sancocho while her younger sister would be practicing her dance lessons in the back yard. She might not have had the stereotypical american childhood, growing up in an area with gang violence and metal detectors at the front entrances of her school. She might have had to chip in more at home than most of her white friends did, helping her parents raise her siblings, sharing a bedroom with her grandmother and sister, and hosting dinner for the neighborhood at their tiny house once a week. But, it was hers. That was until her world fell apart the day she turned fourteen.

Her older brother had gotten arrested by the police for minor shoplifting. But, instead of the cop dropping the sixteen year old off at their door step to be reprimanded by their parents, they dragged her parents and her abuela out of the house. She didn’t remember much from the night. It was like amongst the chaos, her mind had shut down. Everything she had thought she knew was wrong and her body felt numb. Her family wasn’t here legally, but her and her little brother and sister were. Over the next few weeks, they were given the choice. They could go back with their family or they could stay here. Isa was tempted to leave, but her parents begged her not to, and luckily one of the other woman in the neighborhood agreed to take them in so that her family wouldn’t have to be split up in the foster system.

For the next few years, Isa barely got by, trying her hardest just to pass high school while working two part time jobs. And when she got out, she packed up the beat up car she bought and moved her and her siblings out to LA so that they could try to have this better life her family had tried so hard to give them.

Yesterday was my aunt’s birthday. It was great, I absolutely love my family gatherings😄
