My thoughts after sleeping with Nike+ fuelband for over a fortnight!
It's been over a fortnight since I have been using the Nike+ fuelband. I had a big crush on this gadget for quite some time and had to get it shipped from US via my friend.
Why did I get it?
Because I have fetish for niche gadgets, (Pleo, Nao, iRoomba are also on the hitlist), and also I wanted to buy a new wrist watch. So, I could make a good excuse to get this.
Afterthoughts.
Immediately as I got it, I realized that this is not exactly sexy. It was more of a dull looking piece of polycarbonate, which glows up (beautifully!) when you press on the only button. Also, the Nike+ logo was much subdued. But it did gamify (and quantify) my daily physical activity. At least I thought so, initially.
So starting with 2000 nikefuel points (around 2 miles) I generally ended up covering 2500 nikefuel daily. And I was on a streak for around 9 days. Until last Sunday, the day I was doing all the house chores, and sweating it out. And I just passed out at night so tired. As I woke up next morning I realized I had missed my goal for the first time. And I was sure that the previous day was the most tiring and physically demanding day ever had since getting the wristie.
Validation
From then I began to examine fuelband's performance. If I carry something with my left hand (so my hand won't be swinging as I walk) the band would not count any calories (or steps). If I am riding a bike (mysteriously) the wristband counts! And lot other discrepancies. Also socially, the nikeband doesn't give the wows! unless I press the button and show them how cool a gadget I am carrying around. So the interest level came down quite a bit (though I didn't miss any goals since then).
Inference
Finally I came to the inference that Nike+ works best, if you're jogging (as an activity). It is also good just to get you motivated to take a walk (and hit your goal). At least once I frantically got out of my bed to take jog at 11:50pm just to acumulate 300 odd points so that I can hit my goal. Nothing more, nothing less. It is also a modest wrist watch. And yeah, it is pretty rugged, the battery has never run out till now (I plug it for less than 5-10 mins daily). And I wear it while bathing as well, it has had no issues [ I take a shower daily ;)].
What next?
I have already convinced my roomie to get a Nike+ shoes. So I am going to evaluate that, and see if the gamification works better if I have a competitor. Also, both Nike+/fuelband works better with an iPod/iPhone. So, thinking of getting one. :)
PS. I earned 78 fuelpoints while writing this post.
