I met Zewdi sometime in August. She directs the Medeber School in Arbaete Asmara, Eritrea, which has helped children diagnosed with Autism and Down Syndrome discover their unique abilities and help them lead self-sufficient lives for almost seven years. Currently, 51 students between grades 1-5 are enrolled in the Medeber School and follow a cirriculum created by the Ministry of Education. I got a tour of the classroom and learned about the games set up to enhance the students knowledge of #Tigrinya, #English, colors and numbers. One game involved picking out tennis balls from a tent and studying its colors. Zewdi also told me about the progresses made by the pupils- a former student (now pre-teen) works in a grocery store and another is doing carpenter work.
