#iris reed

You spoil me and I love it :P I’m still not super familiar with thinking from his POV so this will probably be OOC for him. 

Part of how these two would interact depends on how they meet for the first time. For example, say Iris got sneaky and followed her Mom to work one night, and another goon finds her before Darla does. Iris is dragged to Oswald, giving a run down of the next heist or something. Darla is close to the front so she can pay attention, and recognizes Iris. After the admission that they’re mother and daughter, Oswald’s probably interested. Iris is more than likely really scared with all the big scary guys around, even if her mother is right there. However she’s also easily distracted and probably intrigued by his monocle. 

But once they’ve met, Iris isn’t too scared by him. He’s interesting and not as big and scary as the other guys around the Iceberg Lounge. As for his view of her, he’s intrigued. Her not being scared of him is something new. He appreciates her interest in all things shiny and valuable, and she’s well behaved. He’s not really good with kids, but her...she may be an exception. Respectful, curious, and very good at wrapping people around her finger. Could be useful. (But he knows that Mama Bear would kill him before he could get away with using Iris.) With time and exposure, his thoughts probably turn from using her to genuinely enjoying her. Compliments Darla for raising her well AND for successfully hiding her for so long. 

I’m still working on the timeline, but before Iris, Darla probably figured she’d lead an unassuming life. Focusing solely on survival, maybe getting out of the town. She was only looking out for number one. Maybe she even had dreams of marrying rich so she didn’t have to worry about being in need or finding a job despite how ill prepared she was for the “real world.” Then some things transpired, and she had Iris to look out for. 

I’m thinking maybe Darla had been planning on putting Iris up for adoption originally. But throughout the pregnancy she became more attached, and by the time Iris was finally born, Darla had changed her mind. She’d do everything she could to give this precious, innocent child everything that she never had as a child.

A physical description of Iris does actually appear about halfway through the book; blonde hair, brown eyes, thin face. Non-threatening. Vaguely pretty in a bland way. Forgettable unless you’re looking for her, specifically. Her ability to blend in and sort of ‘play nice’ is incredibly significant to the plot, if that answers your question at all!
