Huizinga and Caillois
For this post I’m doing summaries of Johan Huizinga’s Nature and Significance of Play as a Cultural Phenomenon – a chapter from his book Homo Ludens (1938); and Roger Caillois’s Classification of Games – a chapter from Man, Play and Games (1958). For Huizinga I made a flowchart that helps one define whether something is play or not, as my main takeaway from his chapter was that it’s hard to come up with a workable definition of play, but it’s possible to discuss various qualities that play possesses that makes it a distinct phenomenon.
For Caillois I made a very simple Twine game with a nod to personality surveys extremely popular on tumblr and elsewhere on social media. It can be found here.
