The day is greeted by not only the crow of a rooster but the loud yawn of a boy who was not used to being awake before noon. But today was quite a change, as sometimes happened when his hunger decided that it was more important than sleep. A low grumble follows, nails scratching at an itch through ragged clothing before the boy crawls his way out of the barrel he had been sleeping in. It was a dry morning, only the dew in the grass any sign of actual moisture that had developed over the night. Huck takes a moment to smack his lips as he fully wakes up, fishing his hat out from the barrel and plopping it onto his head.
“Right... rustle s’me breakfast...” he mumbles to himself.
If he was quick enough, he could slip his way into one of the coops in town and sneak some eggs from the sleeping hens. It was the only time he could get away with such a thing. The hens were used to hands sliding under their bodies at this time of the day and thus would hardly stir, not to mention that no one would come for those eggs yet. It was best for Huckleberry to move quick so he immediately starts down the road with hands tucked into his overalls. Bare feet hit the ground with near silent footfalls, carrying him at a steady pace. Truthfully, breakfast was the only thing on his mind until he spots something rather peculiar for this time of day, in the road.
A young man. Not just a young man but a stranger.
St. Petersburg was a small river town, the kind of small where everyone knew everyone. And Huck knew many of the faces here, knew many of the names but he did not know this man. The first thing that strikes him is the red hair, giving him pause. Only redhead Huck knew, personally, was Tom Sawyer. But this was most definitely not his friend. Curiosity wins out over the little vagrant’s usual wariness. Mostly because this young man is looking around as if he’s lost or something. So, shrugging his shoulders to himself, Huck slowly walks his way over.
Though he’s mindful to stop at enough of a distance that wasn’t unfriendly but would give him enough of a leeway if he needed to run for it.
“Y’need somethin’, mister?”
