Belkis Ayón (1967-1999) — Intolerance [collograph on cream wove paper, 1998]
"In order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must be intolerant of intolerance." This is the so-called tolerance paradox of the philosopher Karl Popper. In other words, when a tolerant society tolerates intolerant worldviews, that is not just the end of tolerance. Ultimately it's the end of this society...
Reading that you misgendered someone by using they/them pronouns legit gave me psychic damage. I’m not going to check the profile of every single person I interact with online using the singular they the way it’s always been used is literally perfect for interacting online. I genuinely hate how these people act like the conservative stereotype of a liberal person it’s upsetting and it makes it so easy for people to hold onto regressive ideologies. Imagine someone who is maybe coming around to a more progressive view on gender getting scolded and told to kill themselves for using the singular they. Like legitimately they are gonna chug the Trump water and never leave again if you do that shit.
I could not say it better myself - you hit it right on the head! It's as if they don't recognize their own intolerance. And that's the thing, it's not about acceptance, it's about tolerance - if I feel differently about something than you do, we don't need to be enemies, we just need to be able to tolerate our differences. When did intolerance become a progressive ideal? @esme-yaleal, @lambdadeltatankie, @nurse-dragonmaid, could you shed some light on this? I think you all wished me dead or something to that effect for not agreeing with you.
I don't really have much hope for these types of people, but there's at least a slim chance some will grow up enough to realize how counterproductive this kind of vitriol is.
