Iām not really sure why Iām still a part of any of the Facebook greyhound groups when the discussions are pretty much a bunch of people who communicate ineffectively online and enter into discussions with buckets full of FEELINGS but not much willingness to actually slow down and respond thoughtfully to contrary opinions.
Thereās a thread on the pro greyhound group right now about how adoptive owners shouldnāt change a dogās name after adoption and just stick to their call name instead to make the transition easier.
And, like, I get it. But I also donāt think this is the be all and end all when it comes to helping a greyhound transition to retired life. I think there are more effective things we could do to aid with their transition to retired life. Some greyhounds (like Lio) May not even respond to their call name at all. So changing their name may not actually be a big deal. Dogs donāt feel the same way about names as humans do. Itās a noise to them. For Lio, his name means recall. If we think about a retired greyhoundās new name the same way we do as other commands (like down, leave it, or stay), itās not unimaginable to think that a retired greyhound could take to their new name as easily as they would other commands as long as youāre consistent with your training.
I said something along these lines in the greyhound group and someone replied with āyou have the right to your opinion..ā
Which is dismissive and exhausting. Even if unintentional. She then responded to other post more in line with her position with lots of CAPS LOCKS MESSAGES OF AGREEMENT. So itās obvious to me sheās not interested in actually responding to what I have to say.
I know this is an internet problem and not exclusively a greyhound Facebook problem but I see this issue come up so much more often on Facebook than any other platform. Kesi once said that she thinks itās because Facebook is generally an older crowd. I think that may be part of it but I think it also has to do with literacy and the scope of digital literacy amongst populations that pretty much only use fb and arenāt fully saturated in diverse online environments.
tl;dr only use greyhound Facebook groups for the cute pictures.
